martin jewellThe former chairman of Enterprise Enfield, Martin Jewell, has been awarded with an MBE in recognition of his services to business start ups and charity in Enfield.

Martin Jewell played a fundamental part in setting up Enterprise Enfield and served as a director and chairman on Enterprise Enfield’s management board on a voluntary basis for over 30 years, retiring from the role only recently.  During that period the enterprise agency supported thousands of people to start and grow their own businesses, many from the poorest parts of the borough – which has enabled them to establish a route to financial security for themselves and their families.

In addition to supporting Enterprise Enfield, Martin played a key part in establishing the RSA Trust in 2004, a charity which provides grants to help charitable organisations in Enfield and the wider area and benefits many local community groups and people.  Since its inception the charity has distributed over £6 million to numerous good causes in Enfield and the wider Lee Valley area.  Martin remains a trustee for the RSA Trust and generously gives his time to support other Enfield based charities including: the Nightingale Cancer Support Centre, the Edmonton Eagles amateur boxing club and the Children’s International Voices of Enfield.

Martin was particularly instrumental in helping to pioneer a programme specifically to support women looking to start their own businesses in Enfield.  With the support of the RSA Trust since 2008, Enterprise Enfield has assisted over 200 women to become enterprise ready.

Des Johnson, Enterprise Enfield’s CEO said, “Enterprise Enfield’s success and sustainability has been helped by the exemplary and selfless work Martin has put in over the years to promote our services and to ensure that it is accessible to all sections of the community.  We are deeply grateful and indebted to Martin for all the exceptional work he has undertaken over the past 30 years - giving his own time to causes he feels strongly about has added value to many people’s lives and helped them achieve their potential in life. It has been a pleasure to work with Martin and share his expertise and knowledge on so many issues.”
