The new chief executive of the Nightingale Cancer Support Centre takes up her role at a time when a growing number of people are turning to the Enfield-based charity "in desperate need of support".

The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre has appointed Meral Nugent as its new CEO to "lead the charity in an exciting new chapter".

With a career spanning 25 years in the UK healthcare sector, Meral brings "in-depth experience of corporate affairs and PR" plus "a wealth of policy and commercial knowledge" to her new role. Her previous job was as director of corporate affairs at HCA Healthcare, and before that she was head of global communications at Advanz Pharma.

Meral comes to her new job with prior experience of the Nightingale, having worked there as a volunteer:

"During my time working here previously, I have come to love the Nightingale and the amazing work it does in the community.

"With 1 in 2 people experiencing cancer in their lifetime, the work of the Nightingale has never been more important, and I am very much looking forward to shaping the next stage of our journey as a charity, while continuing to support as many people as possible through what is an incredibly challenging time."

In a message sent to the Enfield-based charity's many supporters, Meral highlights how the increasing number of people living with cancer (up 17% over five years) has directly impacted the Nightingale's services, with a 33% year-on-year increase in people turning to them for help in 2025.

The Nightingale's chair of trustees, Sam Seth, has expressed their delight at the appointment:

"Meral’s breadth of experience, combined with her strategic communications expertise, makes her exceptionally well placed to lead the charity into its next chapter. The trustees are looking forward to working with Meral as she develops the charity’s strategy to deliver more services to more people across Enfield."

Paying tribute to Meral's predecessor as CEO, Nick Jacobs, who retired in December, Sam Seth said: "The trustees would like to thank Nick for his contributions to the charity over the last three years in helping to grow the services, client base and awareness of the centre."

A message to supporters from the new chief executive of the Nightingale Cancer Centre

I wanted to introduce myself to you all as the Nightingale’s new CEO.

Back in 2024 I began volunteering for the Nightingale after attending one of the charity's events. I was so moved by what they did for the community I knew I wanted to be help in some way.

I am therefore delighted to rejoin the Nightingale as CEO during what is undoubtedly such a pivotal time, not only for the charity but for national cancer care.

Over the last five years there has been a 17% increase of people living with cancer in the UK ,and we are seeing a direct impact on our services. In 2025 we saw 33% more people walking through our doors in desperate need of cancer support than we did in 2024.

The Nightingale is not only a lifeline for people with cancer, supporting their mental and physical health, but also a joyous place full of love, warmth and laughter. I want to continue to build upon this unique aspect of the charity and make sure that more and more people in the community are able to access the Nightingale’s services.

In the coming year we will be looking to spread awareness of our services across the borough, while also encouraging more men and younger people to take advantage of the free support we provide.

As part of this, a key focus will be diversifying our income streams to meet the growing demand for our services.

As a charity, we could not deliver our vital services without your continued support and donations. I wish to take this opportunity to thank you all for being there every step of the way, helping us to keep our doors open for the people who need us.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the coming weeks and months and continuing the incredible work the Nightingale does.

Best wishes for 2026,

Meral Nugent
CEO

The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre

The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre is an independent charity supporting people diagnosed with cancer (as well as their family and friends) with free emotional, physical and practical support. The aim is to help people come to terms with a cancer diagnosis and the changes that come with it. For nearly 25 years it has been one of the most prominent cancer support centres in North London, supporting the NHS and over 20,000 clients. All services are provided free of charge, as it is a fundamental principle of the charity that money should not be a barrier to getting the support needed.
