Bowes Park Folk Club have published the lineup for Saturday's Food Bank Fundraiser at Bounds Green Bowls Club. All takings will go to support a food bank with clients in Palmers Green that needs more people to start donating if it is to survive past this summer.
“It's not every day you get a free 8-hour festival of live music on your doorstep.”
The opening words of the latest email sent out by Bowes Park Folk Club to their regular audience members.
OK, so the venue, just off Brownlow Road, isn't exactly “on your doorstep” if you live in Palmers Green - but it's only five minutes walk from Bowes Park station, which is a two-minute train ride from Palmers Green.
What about “free”? Well, there's no entry charge, but since the main point of the event is to raise money for a struggling foodbank, you shouldn't expect to go home quite as wealthy as you were when you arrived. But it's entirely up to you how much you donate.
Bounds Green Food Bank supports more than 4,600 people, including 1,400 children, offering not just food and essential household items, but a safe, welcoming space where people are treated with dignity during some of the hardest moments of their lives. And some of those families that it helps are in Palmers Green.
“But what if I don't like folk music?” you say.
Well, you might be surprised by the wide range of musical styles that you can encounter at a folk club. And if the act that's playing at the moment isn't to your taste, there'll be another along in a few minutes. And with no fewer than 14 acts playing for free, some amplified, some acoustic, the chances are that you'll enjoy some of them.
Of course, a one-off event like this, even if it raises a lot of money, won't provide the continuing flow of donations that a food bank needs to keep going. If you can afford it, the food bank is urgently asking for contributions of £5–£20 a week, which can make a substantial and noticeable difference in providing balanced meals and ensure families aren’t left choosing between heating and eating.
