Broomfield Blues: Swifty LeZarre & the Smokers/Doc K's Blues Band

Sunday 14 August 1.30pm - 5.30pm

Bandstand, Broomfield Park

202209 broomfield blues

Broomfield Blues is back at the bandstand every Sunday in August, between 1.30pm and 5pm, brought to you by St Harmonica's Blues Club and the Friends of Broomfield Park.

Entry this year is free, but to be able to pay the musicians, we suggest a donation of £7 per adult.

Palmers Green and Southgate play host to one of North London's top Blues clubs - St Harmonica's, located at the Southgate Club N14 5EN. Together with our generous sponsors Winkworth, the Southgate Club, Ralph Hutchings and Phil Davison, St Harmonica's Blues Club along with the Friends of Broomfield Park are delighted to bring you another August full of the best in Blues.

Broomfield Blues is our annual celebration and showcase of what can be found every Friday evening at St Harmonica's Blues Club, twice finalists in the UK Blues Awards 'Venue of the Year' category. Each Sunday afternoon during August come along, eat, drink and listen to three hours of some of the best Blues music London has to offer.

We firmly believe that live music should be accessible and affordable and thanks to our sponsors we are able to return to this being a free event for the first time since 2019. If you like what you hear all we ask is that you acknowledge that with a voluntary donation into the collection "hat", either when it does the rounds or via the Control site.

We've picked some excellent local hot food providers for your added enjoyment and a very fine ice cream stall and bar.

Read the details of each Sunday's event below and come along to as many of the four concerts as you can. Unless the weather is absolutely shocking we will certainly be there each Sunday; if the weather does let us down we will endeavour to relocate the music to the Southgate Club itself, a few minutes walk or bus ride away in Southgate, just 50 metres from Southgate Underground Station.

Each afternoon is preceded by a one hour "open mic" session at 1:30 offering a stage to up and coming as well as experienced performers. Do support them.

Week 1 - Sunday 7th August

customtonesMartin Fieber, the 'Sultan of Slide' is perhaps the UK's best kept slide secret. He brings his hugely talented band 'The Customtones', one of the finest and tightest units around, to Broomfield. Martin is not known as the Sultan of Slide for nothing, he makes all his own guitars under his 'Customtone' label and the tone and the sound he achieves is staggering; some of his original material is equally wonderful. The rest of the band are all masters of their instruments with Mick Parker on drums, Terry Duggan on bass and Steve Taylor on keyboards. By the way, the sun always shines when The Customtones play!

the feelgood bandIndistinguishable from the real thing and endorsed by Wilko Johnson, John B Sparks and the Big Figure, The Feelgood Band will take you back to those pub rock days of the Torrington and other iconic London venues. Mark Sibley fronts this band, you will not be disappointed. Just look at some of the quotes below from people who have seen the band:

"Just seen the excellent Feelgood Band, a fantastic celebration of the timeless music of Mk 1 and 2 DrFeelgood . Loved it from start to finish. It would be sheer Stupidity to miss them" ¬Stephen Foster BBC Suffolk and Dr.Feelgood connoisseur "Spirit of the Thames Delta is alive and well, check them out!"

Week 2 - Sunday 14th August

swifty lezarreThe Right Reverend Swifty LeZarre is one of the most outrageous, amusing and popular players to appear at St Harmonica's Blues Club. Today he brings his band The Smokers to plug in and turn up the volume on his entertaining and original set. Some fine slide guitar playing too.

3:45 - 5:30 DOC K'S BLUES BAND

doc ks blues bandThere are some who say that Doc K's Blues Band are the finest purveyors of Chicago Blues in the capital while some might argue that they are not. You can be the judge of this. All we know is that Mad Dog Dave Barnes has just about the finest voice in UK Blues, and plays a mean slide guitar too, while lead guitarist Malcolm Hine cannot be harmed by conventional weapons. Authentic blues.

Week 3 - Sunday 21st August:

connor selbyVoted the "Young Artist of the Year" in the 2020 UK Blues Awards, Connor Selby is a rising British star in the traditions of Eric Clapton and Peter Green. He has already performed with his band at Wembley Stadium, at the age of 22, at the behest of The Who and has had invitations to tour with the legendary John Mayall as well as The Who. Expect hard-hitting blues and emotional, introspective song writing, which evokes a modern take on the best of the British blues boom of the 1960s.

3:45 - 5:30 DEBBIE BOND

debbie bondSinger, guitar player and songwriter Debbie Bond has been paying her dues in the Alabama backwoods for over 30 years; she is the real deal and we are very lucky to have been able to catch her on her 2019 UK tour. Influenced by the famed sounds of Muscle Shoals, and juke joint blues, her sound is contemporary and original. Her impressive musical story includes years of performing with older traditional Alabama blues musicians, including Johnny Shines, Sam Lay, Eddie Kirkland, Willie King Little, Jimmy Reed and more. She brings with her peerless musicians in the form of 'Radiator' Rick on keyboards and harmonica, Sam Kelly on drums and Ray Carless on Sax, all of whom have performed with international Blues stars.

Week 4 - Sunday 28th August

2:30 - 3:30 HOUSE RED

With John Crowther on guitar, Simon Bennett on keyboards, Les Cole on drums and Dave Thomas on bass. House Red deliver a vintage and eclectic blend of rocking and soulful blues.

blues chapterThe Blues Chapter are probably the finest young Blues band in London They are certainly the most popular band we've ever put on at St Harmonica's. Comprising Sky Wood on vocals, guitar and harmonica and with Jesse Thomas on sizzling, hot shot guitar and Jacob,'Professor Redhair', Thomas on keys and piano you'll see shades of Gary Moore, SRV and Joe Bonamassa in their repertoire; a great festival band and a superb way to close the 2022 Broomfield Blues Series. Those who are about to rock...salute you!
