Enfield Climate Action Forum: The need for climate justice

Wednesday 28 May 7.00pm - 8.30pm

Online

202505 encaf

Online meeting of Enfield Climate Action Forum.

The need for climate justice: addressing poverty is addressing climate change.

Climate change is an environmental and climate justice issue because it is likely to cause disproportionate harm to low-income countries and low-income populations in higher-income countries. Tackling poverty is central to tackling climate change.

Here we will look at how micro credit - loans for those in poverty - can help develop self reliant groups for the most vulnerable at a time of climate change and also how it can help to tackle those in poverty such as those threatened with homelessness.

Leading this discussion will be Olga Biosca, who is Professor of Economics. She leads the Economics of Health and Wellbeing Research Group in the Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health at Glasgow Caledonian University. She is concerned with financial exclusion - a real problem when facing climate change and tackling poverty.

Karen Davies is Founder and Chief Executive of Purple Shoots, who use microcredit to create self-reliant groups - They provide a place for people to get together with other local people and learn new skills. Self reliance will become ever more important as we all adapt to climate change.

Nenna Anyanwu is the Chief Executive of Citizen Advice Bureau Enfield (CAB.) Nenna has been concerned about homelessness in Enfield and has been examining ways that we can address this. Microcredit has been used to help alleviate this problem.
