Duke Ellington is one of America's most celebrated musicians. A unique pianist, orchestrator and band leader, Duke wrote over 2000 compositions in a career spanning over 50 years: from well known songs, like 'It Don't Mean a Thing', "Satin Doll' and 'Mood Indigo' to larger scale works like 'Black Brown and Beige' and the 'Far East Suite. Join us for an evening in which we perform some of Ellington's more familiar tunes alongside some lesser known masterpieces. And we'll pay tribute to past performances as well as celebrating Duke's music in the here and now!
Karen Sharp (saxophone)
A prominent figure on the UK Jazz scene, admired for her warm tone and melodic playing, Karen began her career touring with Humphrey Lyttelton. Since then her performances have included those with John and Jaqui Dankworth, Ken Peplowski, Tina May, Howard Alden, Harry Allen, Warren Vache, the Stan Tracey Big Band, and Ronnie Scotts Jazz Orchestra. Karen has won the British Jazz awards on several ocasions.
Malcolm Earie Smith (vocals/trombone)
A highly versatile trombonist and vocalist, Malcolm's many performing credits include Bryan Ferry, John Dankworth, Martha Reeves, Kenny Baker and Hans Koller. As professor of jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire since 2007 (and visiting tutor at other major colleges), Malcolm has played, an Important role in mentoring the next generation of young British jazz artists.
Colin Good (piano)
A specialist in jazz piano of the 1920's and 1930's, and a skilled composer, arranger and musical director, Colin's early career included loading "Vile Bodies Orchestre for several years at the Ritz hotel, touring with the Inkspots, as well as composing for theatre, television and film. Beginning with Bryan Ferry's album ol 1990's songs 'AsTime Goes By' (2000), Colin became Ferry's pianist, arranger and musical director for 15 years.
Simon Thorpe (bass)
Simon Thorpe is one of the UK's best known jazz bassists, in demand with many well known jazz artists including Bobby Wellins, Stacey Kent, and Elaine Delmar. Other performing credits include Amy Winehouse, Imelda Staunton, Mica Puris, and Scottish folk fiddle wizard John McCusker. He runs several of his own projects: the swing band Jivin' Miss Daisy and GerswINNOVATION. We has written music for theatre, jazz ensembles and the BBC.
Matt Skelton (drums)
Matt Shelton is a highly versatile jazz drummer. He has accompanied many leading Jazz luminaries such as Harry "Sweets" Edlison, Conte Candoli, Bucky Pizzarelli, Scott Hamilton, John Hendricks and Gregory Porter, He has recorded and appeared with singers such as Marion Montgomery, Dame Cleo Laine and Claire Martin. A founder member of the John Wilson Orchestra, Matt toured the USA and recorded with Seth Macfarlane in 2015.
