Rumours of Spring film festival: Hayaletler (Ghosts)

Saturday 12 July 6.00pm

In Istanbul, a day on the verge of a country-wide power surge unfolds with four characters—a mother whose son is in prison, a young woman committed to dancing, a female activist-artist, and a cunning middle man—all in a neighbourhood undergoing a process of gentrification for the “New Turkey”.

The film will be introduced by producer and director Pinar Fontini, who continues her academic studies in London and Istanbul at the intersection of Near Eastern Cinema and Feminist Film Studies.

Following the film, award-winning London-based Kurdish filmmaker Mizgin Müjde Arslan joins us to discuss women in Turkish cinema, migration and representation on screen.

Rumours of Spring: A Global Series on Hope for the Future

Discover the extraordinary in the everyday.

Rumours of Spring brings critically acclaimed international cinema to Enfield. Join us every Saturday in July for a month of award-winning films, showcasing ordinary human stories which inspire us to dream of a better future.

Inspired by Farah Bashir's memoir of the same name detailing her life as a young girl growing up against the backdrop of conflict in Kashmir, the films in Rumours of Spring place the lives of women and girls centre stage – from the women whose neighbourhood is undergoing gentrification in Turkey to the unionisation of garment factory workers in Bangladesh – discover the extraordinary lives of ordinary women from across the globe from a selection of ground-breaking women filmmakers.

Alongside the films, the festival will include an exciting programme of community-led cultural events, panel discussions and Q&As with filmmakers, and an art installation by British-Kashmiri artist Hussina Raja.

TICKETS

£6.50 headline film tickets (includes access to events programme unless otherwise specified)
