Southgate Opera present Carmen by Georges Bizet

A Story of Passion, Defiance, and Destiny

This June, Southgate Opera brings one of the world’s most beloved
masterpieces to the Wyllyotts Theatre.

The story follows the downfall of Don José, a naive soldier who is seduced by the fiery, independent Carmen. Forfeiting his duty, his family, and his honour to be with her, José soon finds himself trapped in a web of jealousy and obsession. As Carmen’s affections turn toward the glamorous bullfighter Escamillo, the stage is set for a collision between a woman whodemands absolute freedom and a man who cannot let her go.

From the instantly recognisable opening bars of the overture to the
seductive rhythms of the Habanera and the triumphant swagger of the
Toreador’s Song, the score is a non-stop parade of opera’s greatest hits. Bizet’s music doesn't just accompany the drama, it responds with sensitivity to the shifting emotional landscape of the drama, capturing every moment of seduction, celebration, and impending doom.
