Southgate Opera present Verdi's Nabucco
Thursday 23 June 2022 until Saturday 25 June 2022 7.30pm
Wyllyotts Theatre, Darkes Lane, Potters Bar, EN6 2HN
Nabucco was Verdi’s first big hit and made him famous. First staged in 1842, it became immensely popular, due in particular to the chorus sung by the Hebrew slaves in exile ‘Va, Pensiero’ (Speed your journey, my thoughts and my longings). And today it is still one of Verdi’s most sung and performed works, alternating lyrical arias with stirring ensembles.
The story is loosely based on events in the Old Testament. Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar), the King of Babylon, is driven supernaturally mad, proclaims himself God, and is only restored to health when he repents. Meanwhile there is a love triangle situation between his two daughters, one cruel and treacherous, the other noble and tender, and a Jewish prince exiled from his homeland.
A non-professional production by Southgate Opera.
