Southgate Opera presents Patience – Gilbert & Sullivan’s sparkling satire of love, poetry and pretence
Southgate Opera returns to the stage with Patience, one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most witty and tuneful operettas, at the Wyllyotts Theatre, Potters Bar, from 11–14 February.
First performed in 1881, Patience is a playful yet merciless send-up of aestheticism, romantic posturing and the absurd lengths people will go to in the name of love. When the poet Bunthorne becomes the object of devotion for a chorus of swooning young ladies, the steadfastly practical Patience finds herself bewildered by the very idea of romance.
What follows is a delightful clash between sincerity and affectation, all set to some of Sullivan’s finest music.
Southgate Opera’s production highlights the opera’s enduring relevance, as its gentle mockery of fashionable ideals and pretentious aspirations feels as fresh today as it did in the Victorian era. Audiences can expect wonderful singing, a fantastic orchestra and the company’s commitment to high quality performances.
With a long and proud history of performing Gilbert and Sullivan, Southgate Opera is renowned for breathing new life into these classic works while remaining true to their spirit. Patience offers both seasoned G&S fans and newcomers a perfect introduction to the genre: clever, tuneful and laugh-out-loud funny.
