It’s always a pleasure to welcome back to the club the delightful Fran McGillivray Band. This is an experienced trio of musicians who have been bringing us their unique take on Roots music for many years. Fran McGillivray fronts the band singing and playing bass while Mike Burke adds his virtuoso electric and acoustic guitar playing and Roger Nunn switches between full drum kit and djembe. The breadth of their repertoire is astonishing from slow jazzy blues through to the rocking blues of the likes of Albert King. Their latest album ‘Rain’ is once again in the top 10 of the Americana charts possibly following Fran’s appearance on Cerys Matthews’ Blues Show on Radio 2 on February 27th which can be heard here until Sunday 26th March:
Fabulous reviews wherever they play either as a duo or trio, don’t miss the trio this Friday.
And the support is also magnificent. What do you get when you cross two members of the Low Down Dogs with That Blue Patch? You might expect a Dachshund called Patch but no, you get Hopperstomp: the latest band on the block, starting with authentic Jug Band material (think Memphis Jug Band, Gus Cannon, Memphis Minnie), and working outwards. Ruth Mignano, Dave Buckwell, John Crowther - all held together by the percussion skills of Pete Abernethy.
Support starts at 8.30pm; Fran McGillivray Band starts around 9.15pm.
Admission is free to card holding St Harmonica’s Blues Club Members (membership costs just £10 for the year) otherwise £10 on the door. The hat is passed around to pay for the musicians.
See you soon,
Dave, Simon, & John
