We are back at St Harmonica’s this Friday in the company of Doc K’s Blues Band. Originally founded in Muswell Hill in 1964 by bass player Ashley Hutchings, Doc K have undergone a number of changes in personnel but still provide some of the finest Chicago Blues in London. 'Mad Dog' Dave Barnes and Chris Hargrave provide the vocals for a sublime set of classic blues, while Doctor Ika on lead guitar has finally provided the band with a genuine M.D. in the lineup. The rhythm section of Mick Parker on drum kit and Dave Thomas on bass provides a rock solid foundation for the others to strut their stuff. Always popular and always getting asked to return wherever they play, if you are serious about your blues, you really should not miss Doc K’s Blues Band this Friday.
The support is equally sublime in the form of acoustic blues master Kelvin Davies accompanied by the beautifully subtle harmonica playing of Gary Jones, who will start the evening off at 8.30pm followed by two sets from the Docs beginning at around 9.00pm.
See you soon,
Dave, Simon, & John
St Harmonica's at the Southgate Club
St Harmonica's is at the Southgate Club on Fridays - apart from the first Friday of the month. Instead of the first Friday of the month, St Harmonica's will be two days later, ie the Sunday after the first Friday (which in some months will be the second Sunday of the month).
St Harmonica's Blues Club is based at the
Southgate Club and Art Gallery, just 50m from Southgate Underground Station, with the entrance to the Blues Club in Crown Lane N14 5EN. Nominated, and twice finalists, for UK Blues Venue of the year St Harmonica's Blues Club has been providing the best blues in North London for over 20 years. Run by musicians for musicians and Blues fans we soon outgrew our humble beginnings in a small venue in Palmers Green; we then spent 10 years at St Monica's Parish Centre from which a play on words gave us our club name. Our view is that live music should certainly not be free but that it should be affordable and accessible to everyone, as well as of the highest quality.
With seating for over 100 and plenty more standing room the venue has a terrific bar and stage area for the bands. On Friday evenings (except the first Friday of the month) you will see performers from 8.30pm to 11.30pm while on the Sunday following the first Friday of the month we hold our monthly Blues Jam from 6.30pm with all welcome.
Our aim has always been to put on the best in UK, international and local Blues, making it available to all. To do this we need to have large and appreciative audiences, reward the musicians appropriately and ensure the survival of our home at the Southgate Club. As we are no longer bound by Covid regulations, from September 2022 we have returned to our previous model of £10 annual membership which then, with your membership card, gives you free admission to all our Friday and Sunday events. Our glamorous assistant moves through the crowd for donations into 'the hat' according to what you can afford and feel that the evening is worth; that’s how we pay the musicians. Annual membership with free admission each week runs until the end of the calendar year. (Non members are charged £10 admission on the door or encouraged to become members of course!)
