St Harmonica's Blues Club: Big Gilson + Steff Sessions & Jim Darby

Friday 16 October 8.30pm

The Southgate Club, 17 Chase Side, N14 5BP (Entrance is in Crown Lane)

Acclaimed Brazilian blues-rock guitarist from Rio de Janeiro, Big Gilson, is returning to his blues roots with his Back2Blues UK Tour which will highlight his original blues songs and inspired versions of blues classics from blues legends such as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, T Bone Walker, Etta James, Elmore James, Big Bill Broonzy, Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed and Freddy King.

Renowned as a pioneer of the Brazilian blues scene, Big Gilson has spent nearly 40 years touring globally and is highly regarded as a masterful electric slide guitar player, fusing raw, emotive Chicago-style blues with high-energy blues-rock. Throughout his extensive career, he has released over 18 albums including acclaimed live albums recorded in New York, Dallas and Florida. Big Gilson has shared stages opening for blues and rock royalty, including; B.B.King, Buddy Guy, Steve Winwood and Robert Cray. He is backed on this tour by a stellar band of top UK musicians with Chris Sharley on drums, Derek White on bass and Ian Salisbury on keys.

Support comes from Stef Sessions teaming up with former world Harmonica Champion Jim Darby.

Support act starts at 8.30pm followed by two sets from the main act starting at around 9.00pm. Arrive early to make sure of a seat.

St Harmonica's at the Southgate Club

St Harmonica's is at the Southgate Club on Fridays - apart from the first Friday of the month. Instead of the first Friday of the month, St Harmonica's will be two days later, ie the Sunday after the first Friday (which in some months will be the second Sunday of the month).

St Harmonica's Blues Club is based at the Southgate Club and Art Gallery, just 50m from Southgate Underground Station, with the entrance to the Blues Club in Crown Lane N14 5EN. Nominated, and twice finalists, for UK Blues Venue of the year St Harmonica's Blues Club has been providing the best blues in North London for over 20 years. Run by musicians for musicians and Blues fans we soon outgrew our humble beginnings in a small venue in Palmers Green; we then spent 10 years at St Monica's Parish Centre from which a play on words gave us our club name. Our view is that live music should certainly not be free but that it should be affordable and accessible to everyone, as well as of the highest quality.

With seating for over 100 and plenty more standing room the venue has a terrific bar and stage area for the bands. On Friday evenings (except the first Friday of the month) you will see performers from 8.30pm to 11.30pm while on the Sunday following the first Friday of the month we hold our monthly Blues Jam from 6.30pm with all welcome.

Our aim has always been to put on the best in UK, international and local Blues, making it available to all. To do this we need to have large and appreciative audiences, reward the musicians appropriately and ensure the survival of our home at the Southgate Club. £10 annual membership gives you free admission to all our Friday and Sunday events. Our glamorous assistant moves through the crowd for donations into 'the hat' according to what you can afford and feel that the evening is worth; that’s how we pay the musicians. Annual membership with free admission each week runs until the end of the calendar year. (Non members are charged £10 admission on the door or encouraged to become members of course!)
