[Original article]

A recent walkabout of reported crime and ASB hotspots in Palmers Green by councillors and senior police officers was prompted by a letter from the local MP passing on concerns from constituents about incidents such as drug dealing carried out in broad daylight, leading to some residents "withdrawing from their community" due to "fear and lack of trust".

The Palmers Green walkabout was held at the initiative of Southgate & Wood Green MP Bambos Charalambous, and took place last weekend. The MP was accompanied by the leader of Enfield Council, Ergin Erbil, Palmers Green Ward councillor Doug Taylor and three police officers.

The walkabout was arranged after Bambos wrote to Enfield Council leader Ergin Erbil and Detective Superintendent Marco Bardetti in September, passing on concerns expressed by "many residents" about the current level of crime and antisocial behaviour, particularly drug dealing, noting that many people "report that these incidents occur openly, in broad daylight, and on residential streets". Constituents were, he wrote, saying that they felt increasingly unsafe, were questioning a "lack of preventative measures and visible police presence", and in some cases were "withdrawing from their community and high streets due to fear and lack of trust".

The MP's letter also reported concerns about "suspected illegal business practices", which have "led to a growing sense of unease and raised questions about the regulations that are governing businesses". The MP stresses the importance of residents feeling safe and "assured that effective measures are in place to prevent both anti-social behaviour and unlawful business activity", and expresses a desire to work more closely with the council and the borough commander to address concerns and enhance safety.

The full text of the letteris at the end of this report. It was included in Bambos's regular email newsletter to constituents. Additionally, he published the following statement on his website, including a link to mobile phone camera footage recorded during the tour.

Crime walkabout

November 7, 2025/in Community Safety, Enfield Southgate, News, Southgate and Wood Green /by Bambos

Following concern from many constituents, I recently wrote to the Council and the Borough Commander about community safety in #Enfield.

Last Friday, I organised for the Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Ergin Erbil, and Cllr Doug Taylor to join me on a walkabout of Palmers Green with the police.

We spoke to local residents about their concerns and looked at what preventative measures can be put in place to deter drug-dealing, ASB, shoplifting, and fly-tipping.

In response to an invitation to comment and for an update, Bambos replied:

As a result of recent discussions, I am hoping for additional security measures from Enfield Council such as CCTV, increased lighting and, when appropriate, enhanced patrols at hotspots by the Safer Neighbourhood Team.

He also wrote that, "due to public demand and the success of the walkabout, we are hoping to do another one elsewhere in the borough", which would involve the council leader, environmental officers and police.

Dear Ergin,

Re: Constituents' Concerns on Crime

I am writing to you on behalf of many constituents who are concerned about community safety locally. Please note I have also written to the Acting Borough Commander Marco Bardetti to request collaborative working on this issue.

Residents have raised with me concerns about the current level of crime and antisocial behaviour, particularly incidents of drug-dealing. Many report that these incidents occur openly, in broad daylight, and on residential streets. As a result, constituents say they feel increasingly unsafe and have begun to question a lack of preventative measures and visible police presence. Constituents have reported withdrawing from their community and high streets due to fear and lack of trust and in some cases have stopped reporting crime and anti-social behaviour for fear that nothing will be done about it.

In addition, constituents have raised concerns about suspected illegal business practices. This has led to a growing sense of unease and raised questions about the regulations that are governing businesses.

It is fundamental that local residents feel safe in their community and feel assured that effective measures are in place to prevent both anti-social behaviour and unlawful business activity. Our community is built on trust in one another and it vital we listen to our what our neighbourhoods are telling us.

I am grateful for the operations carried out by your joined up working operations and measures put in place to date, however I would like to work more closely with Enfield Council and the Borough Commander to address these concerns and work together to enhance safety in our community.

I know you will only be able to act on intelligence you receive from our community. I advise constituents to formally report crime via the Metropolitan Police website: www.met.police.uk or anonymously through Crimestoppers: crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information/forms/give-information-anonymously and to share their concerns about local issues through the Met Engage platform: metengage.co.uk/.

I look forward to hearing from you about how we can better work together to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour locally.
Yours sincerely

Bambos Charalambous MP

Commendable but ineffective in my opinion. A much better way of demonstrating realistically what is going on in the area, would have been to have taken some of that group to see the police at work on real-life investigations such as the time that Boris Johnson went to one such event when he was Mayor. He went with police from Edmonton at 5am in the morning when they made a number of raids on the Northumberland Estate which resulted in arrests and finding class A drugs. I attended a Met Engage event last month in Edmonton where the head of the Met Police, Sir Mark Rowley said that they want to put more 'feet on the beat' and increase the visual presence on police officers on a much more regular basis. Only one person in the photo accompanying this article (the leader of the council) attended the Met Engage event by the way and there were no MPs there from any of the borough constituencies and only two councillors. However, there were over 150 people there representing community groups (from across the whole of Enfield) and they were very vocal about what they wanted and what their concerns were. I don't think it was a coincidence that they announced a few days later that the front desk at Edmonton Police Station would remain open – admittedly with shorter hours.
