Reader Panayiota raises important points about the negative impacts of noise pollution, especially on vulnerable people.
Dear Palmers Green Community,
I am writing because I have noticed that the issue of fumes and air pollution is rightly discussed within the community, but noise pollution does not seem to receive the same attention.
Noise pollution can have a serious effect on people’s quality of life. Constant traffic noise, revving engines, horns, construction, fireworks and other loud or unpredictable noises can make it difficult for people to sleep, relax and feel safe in their own homes.
For some people, the impact can be much more severe. My son is autistic and has severe sensory difficulties, including a very significant sensitivity to noise. When he becomes overwhelmed by anxiety and sensory overload, he can seriously hurt himself. He self-calms by biting chunks of his hand until it bleeds. His anxiety and distress can also lead to him seriously injuring himself or others and destroying property.
This is why I feel strongly that noise pollution needs to be taken seriously. For someone with severe sensory difficulties, excessive or unpredictable noise is not simply an inconvenience. It can contribute to extreme distress, anxiety and potentially dangerous behaviour.
I understand that communities need to balance many different needs, but I believe noise pollution should be recognised as an important environmental and public health issue alongside fumes and air pollution.
I would be very grateful if Palmers Green Community could consider raising awareness of noise pollution and giving local residents an opportunity to share their experiences and concerns.
People who are particularly vulnerable to noise deserve to be considered when decisions are made about our local environment.
