After being rudely interrupted in March 2020, face-to-face lectures by WEA Enfield & Southgate are back at the United Reformed Church in Palmers Green and Enfield Baptist Church, starting in September.

Some subjects continue to be taught online, including Ruth Mulandi’s film and art classes and Amy Miller’s history course. And, wherever you live, you'll still have access to hundreds of online courses run by WEA branches in other parts of the country.

Key Periods in Art History

Course description: Art from all the ages is available to us through galleries and museums, books, TV and internet. The course will survey all the major developments with the specific intent of helping you to enjoy art with more confidence. The key periods in European and Middle Eastern art will include: Aegean and Egyptian, Roman and Byzantine, Islamic, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Dutch Golden Age, the Grand Tour, Rococo, Neo-Classical, Romantic, Orientalism, Realism, Art Nouveau, early 20th century modern art, later 20th century expressive art, conceptual art, postmodern art.

China/Korea/Japan 1368-1798

In 1368, the Hongwu Emperor took the throne in China, establishing the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). While the Ming seemed secure and China dominated the region – it was a period of political upheaval for Korea and Japan. Korea changed political leaders from the Koryo (Goryo) to Choson (Joseon) dynasties. Japan, in the throes of the Warring States (Sengoku) period of turmoil which eventually came to an end under a strong Shogunate in 1615, had its own ambitions towards Korea and ultimately China. In this course we will explore the cultural and political identities of China, Korea and Japan as well as their relationships with a specific emphasis on the way that ideas, practices and material culture – like tea drinking and porcelain – travelled across the region. Our period will begin with the Ming in China and will end at the turn of the nineteenth century just after Britain’s failed Macartney Embassy (1793) saw an end to attempts to gain greater trading concessions with China.

Honest Toil - London Labour in 19th Century

The world of the ‘labouring classes’ in London in the nineteenth century will be examined through the lens of a range of writers from the period, such as Henry Mayhew, Annie Besant, William Booth, Elizabeth Gaskell and William Morris. The course will range across a variety of employments, from the street sellers to the shop workers, from the navvies to the dockers, from domestic service to the factory to the sweat shop. The course will also examine how employment was affected by developments in education, transport, trade unionism and Parliamentary representation

Film: Nine to Five - Films about Women At Work

The 1980 US Comedy 'Nine to Five' was inspired by an associaton of female office workers set up in Boston in the 1970s. It's just one example of films that depict women at work. There are comedies like Nine to Five, biopics of women rights leaders, documentaries and dramas, often inspired by true events. We'll have a look at works from across different decades, genres and countries to get a picture of how the pictures tell the story of women in the workplace.

Artists in Britain 1950-2000

After the end of the Second World War, British art saw the development of new and radical art through the work of a new generation of artists. This course begins after 1945 when many artists questioned the legacy of earlier British art by taking experimental approaches in response to the changed and changing world. Over five weeks, this course explores the work of selected British artists each decade up to the emergence of the ‘Young British Artists’ at the start of a new millennium. How did their work reflect social, cultural and political concerns of the time?  Each week, the course focuses on 2-3 artists, working in a range of media, from painting and sculpture to film and photography, whose trailblazing and experimental approach have contributed to a more inclusive story of British art. Artists featured will include Eduardo Paolozzi, Prunella Clough, Frank Bowling, Bridget Riley, Margaret Harrison, Gustav Metzger, Sonia Boyce, Derek Jarman, Helen Chadwick and Chris Ofili.

Art History: The Seasons

A look at art works depicting the four seasons gives us an opportunity to explore landscape art, from medieval times to today and different parts of the world, including the German romantics, the Barbizon school, the Impressionists and Chinese traditional paintings. We'll study key works by key painters and explore key developments and developments of the genre. A friendly, relaxed online course organised around looking at works in detail and discussing them.

Great courses but unfortunately as they are mostly during the day a bit inaccessible to us wage slave folk. I thought that WEA was about access to learning. You’d really need to be retired unemployed or on maternity leave
