[Original article]

The Palmers Green Action Team is calling on residents to oppose renewed attempts to obtain planning permission to convert a former bank into gambling venue. The deadline for objecting is 15th January.

In June last year PGC published an article by Mati Valdivieso from the Palmers Green Action Team calling on residents to support the Action Team's objection to the proposed conversion of the former Lloyds Bank premises in Green Lanes into an "adult gaming centre (sui generis)". The objection, which was supported by local MP Bambos Charalambous, was eventually successful and planning permission was refused.

However, subsequently, building work has continued inside the building and an appeal against Enfield Council's decision was lodged. Palmers Green Action Team will again be objecting and have provided the following information for anyone who wishes to support them

Help stop the proposed gambling arcade in the old Lloyds Bank

Although planning permission was denied, East Kent Leasing Limited have appealed. To help fight the appeal we need you to lodge an objection, but this must be done directly to the Planning Inspectorate (PINS) and not Enfield Council by 15th January.

Go to the Planning Inspectorate website and search for case number 3356297 or use the direct link below to make your representation.

https://acp.planninginspectorate.gov.uk/ViewCase.aspx?caseid=3356297

Those who objected to the planning application will have received a letter from the council with the next stages of the planning application. But it is also worth mentioning that making comments at appeal stage is not limited to those who made representations at the planning application stage.  Anyone wishing to comment on the appeal can do so via PINS’ website.

Attached is the Statement of Case. PINS are strict on timescales, therefore we must adhere to their deadlines to ensure additional comments are considered. Every representation which was received at the planning application stage will be sent to PINS by Enfield Council. The appellant has requested an informal hearing on 25th of February at 10am, which is open to all to attend.

It's another blow to high streets everywhere, not just Palmers Green and a shame the banks or local council have little influence over the future usage of a closed down bank. Surely we have reached a peak in terms of how many gambling venues can be supported in Palmers Green?

The challenge we have is that one of the appellant's arguments is that Adult Gaming Centres (AGCs) are distinct from betting shops and should not be conflated with them in terms of clustering or intensification policies. They emphasise that AGCs focus on low-stakes gaming and cater to a different demographic. Sadly AGCs are not mentioned directly in Enfield's Development Management Document DMD33 but the lack of reference is because it is from 2014 and pre-dates the proliferation of AGCs which have evovled out of of seaside amusements arcades.

Details on the PG Action Team website on submitting representaiton which needs to be done by the 15 January and also the hearing on 25 February:
