The High Court’s decision to quash Spurs’ planning permission to build on Whitewebbs public park is to be welcomed. The plan, constructing 10 football pitches and the exclusion of us, the public, with the permanent loss of 16 hectares of public parkland for a consideration of little more than £2m spread over two decades never made any sense to me. There is a chance of an appeal but against a background of no one wanting this development, including the council, and the recent negative site-development related comments from the Planning inspector responding to Enfield’s Local Plan, suggests it may be time for Spurs put their wallet and lawyers away and concentrate instead on the new football season.

What then jumps out from the early reports is that of council staff taking a “deliberate and considered decision” to ultimately “misled its own planning committee”. As a ratepayer what I would now ask is the council to undertake the work to ascertain the who, the why and publish what will happen about it. Brand matters across so many dimensions and Enfield, not least its council, has some way to climb back after too many recent adverse brand-impacting issues.
