A new chapter in grassroots filmmaking begins with the launch of the Talkies Short Film Awards , building on 14 years of dedicated support for emerging film talent by Talkies Community Cinema.
Since its founding in 2012, Talkies has established itself as a volunteer-led, not-for-profit cinema with a clear mission: to champion independent film and create meaningful opportunities for early-career filmmakers. Through its acclaimed short film commissions, mentorship programmes and community screenings, Talkies has already supported dozens of new voices — commissioning nearly 40 short films to date and reinvesting income directly back into talent development.
The new Short Film Awards represent a natural evolution of this work. Designed to celebrate outstanding short films made in recent years, the awards create a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work to live audiences, gain recognition from industry-informed judges, and connect with a growing creative community
14 years of grassroots impact
Over the past 14 years, Talkies has gone far beyond simple exhibition. Its approach combines:
- Direct funding, offering cash commissions to support production
- Mentorship from industry professionals, guiding filmmakers through script development and production
- Practical local support, including locations, audiences, and production assistance
- Public screening opportunities, giving filmmakers a vital platform to share their work
From commissions to recognition
While the Talkies commissions have focused on enabling films to be made, the Short Film Awards extend that journey — recognising excellence, rewarding achievement, and helping films reach wider audiences.Selected films will be screened as part of a dedicated awards event, with prizes awarded both by a judging panel of talkies volunteers and an audience vote, reinforcing Talkies’ community-led ethos and commitment to accessible cinema.
Supporting the next generation
In an increasingly competitive funding landscape, early-career filmmakers often face barriers to entry. Initiatives like Talkies provide an essential stepping stone — offering not just financial support, but the confidence, networks and visibility needed to progress.By combining commissioning, mentoring and now formal recognition through the Short Film Awards, Talkies continues to play a vital role in nurturing new voices and stories — many rooted in the rich and diverse communities of North London.
A community-driven future
The Talkies Short Film Awards reaffirm the organisation’s founding belief: that great filmmaking talent can emerge from anywhere, and that local, community-led initiatives can have a lasting impact on the national creative landscape. As the awards launch, Talkies invites filmmakers, audiences and supporters alike to be part of the next phase — celebrating bold storytelling, fresh perspectives, and the filmmakers of tomorrow.
