[Original article]

Enfield Council has published its concept design for a new walking and cycling route linking Palmers Green town centre to New Southgate station via relatively quiet roads. There will be drop-in events at PG library on 20th November and at Our Lady of Lourdes school on 22nd November. An online survey will be available until 7th December

The complete concept design for the proposed new walking and cycling route (adapted version of this map on the council website)

The concept design takes on board feedback from an earlier engagement exercise carried out in 2023, which has prompted some changes to the proposals.

The council's Journeys & Places team have recorded a YouTube presentation in which the project manager, Ryan Hicks, walks viewers through all the elements of the concept design.

The scheme is designed to provide a safe route between Palmers Green town centre and New Southgate Station, via Arnos Grove Station. It uses mainly relatively quiet streets, with traffic calming measures where needed, interspersed with short sections of segregated cycle lane along busy roads: along Aldermans Hill between Palmers Green Station and the end of Old Park Road; along Wilmer Way between Ashridge Gardens and Bowes Road; and along Bowes Road outside Arnos Grove Station.

At Wilmer Way the new route will meet the existing walking and cycling route through Arnos Park, which continues northwards along the Waterfall Walk, through Brunswick Park and Oak Hill Park towards East Barnet. The scheme proposes improvements to this route too. The shared walking and cycling path through Arnos Park will be improved, but the most important change is where the route leaves Arnos Park and crosses Waterfall Road, very close to the roundabout and the bridge under the Piccadilly Line viaduct. Currently, there is no proper facility for pedestrians and cyclists to cross this busy stretch of road. A parallel pedestrian/cyclist crossing will be installed here, making this part of the route much safer and pleasanter, and improving access to the Waterfall Walk.

The route incorporates nine "parallel crossings" for pedestrians and cyclists, several of them at crucial points that currenty lack a protected crossing.

In all, the proposals include nine parallel crossings, which combine a zebra crossing for pedestrians and a cycle crossing running next to it. Several of these crossings will be at points where there is an obvious "desire line" but currently no safe crossing, eg across Broomfield Lane between the two parts of Broomfield Avenue

Depending not only on the outcome of the current public engagement, but also on the availability of funding, the project will move on to detailed design work, followed by a statutory consultation. The council has not provided even rough estimations of when each stage in the process might occur.

The timeline included in the briefing for the project does not include any dates. Any progress past the current engagement and concept design phase will depend on the availability of funding

Quite a few of us attended the engagement events, and there was a considerable amount of opposition to various aspects of this complex and unclear proposal.

But surely there is one simple thing which LBE could do to encourage people to walk (especially older folk, like myself).  It came to me this morning, as I struggled to negotiate the treacherous pavements, on my way to my GP's surgery.  Please could LBE repair the broken and uneven pavements and put grit/salt on pathways and side roads in icy weather?  I appreciate that this would not involve paying any expensive consultants or 'planners', but I suspect it would encourage many more people to walk - if that is LBE's genuine desire!

I think Wendy makes a good point. Personally I don't think any of these schemes are about improvements for walking. If you look at the cycle lanes in Green Lanes from Palmers Green to Enfield Town there has been little done to make improvements for those walking such as lack of pedestrian lights at Sainsburys and the junction at Bourne Hill (admittedly currently proposed) and some of the shared (non-segregated) walkways such as Winchmore Hill Broadway and PG High Street are dangerous especially if you are partially sighted. No wonder all the buses now have announcements warning people to be careful when they get off at the badly planned stops. The scheme proposed at New Southgate basically utilises a 'quietway' scheme the likes of which have been in London for over thirty years and didn't require that level of spend apart from minimal signage. The crossing points do make sense for linkage but a lot of the scheme isn't necessary.

No question, encouraging walking would be aided by an improvement to the often-dreadful state of our pavements, as well as safer road crossing areas. I would add the speed and noise of adjoining traffic can be off putting for walkers too. I would encourage a break of mindset that cycling and walking routes are invariably wrapped in together: in this case in walking from Arnos to Palmers Green I use the two parks route rather than the (cycling) streets being suggested.

I agree that walking and cycling are two separate issues, especially as, these days, so many of the modern  'cycles' are high speed motorised vehicles.  And increasingly these are becoming linked to criminality (ref last night's London news).  Like Karl, I would always choose to walk this route through Arnos and Broomfield Parks, but Broomfield does not have all of it's gates unlocked until 8 a.m. or 8.30 at weekends, so that's no good for early morning walkers like myself.  Also, the paths can be treacherous in icey conditions.
And now, they seem to be suggesting putting a wide cycle way through Arnos Park, with lighting, which really would urbanise the park and spoil it's very special atmosphere.  The LBE council officers and external consultants at the engagement events did not appear to know exactly what they were actually proposing re Arnos Park.  They also did not appear to know about the river re-location proposals and how this might impact their plans.  So, it all seemed to be a bit of a chaotic mess, when any detailed questions were asked.
Meanwhile, Arnos Park remains a beautiful and therapeutic place, with some amazing nature restoration work currently being carried out by the Friends of Arnos Park - well done folks!  Described as a 'hidden gem' by LBE, it must be retained as a place for public recreation and peace - not a 'cycle way'!

After attending the consultation event in Palmers Green library in Nov 2025 and speaking to neighbours, there seems to be one aspect of the concept design that we all(?) appreciate: safer road crossings for pedestrian; especially, a zebra or parallel crossing that connects Broomfield Avenue at the busy Broomfield Lane is long overdue.
