Enfield Film Orchestra

enfield film orchestra

Enfield Film Orchestra was formed on 28 April 2011 (our original name was North London People's Orchestra).

We wanted somewhere for local musicians to come and enjoy playing together, without the pressure and exacting minimum standard often required by other amateur classical ensembles.

The main thing to say is that we are not high brow, we are inclusive and it's okay to make mistakes at Enfield Film Orchestra - that's the way we learn. New players sometimes find themselves sitting with a novice on one side and a seasoned professional musician on the other. Everyone is friendly and encouraging and that's the way we like it.

If you enjoy playing a varied mix of material, concentrating on film, TV and stage music, and want to learn and develop, whatever your starting point, we would love to be able to help you through Enfield Film Orchestra. We also offer exciting symphonic collaborations with our sister-project, English Jazz Orchestra, swing big band and vocals in London and Manchester

Enfield Film Orchestra rehearses on Thursday evenings during academic term time between 8pm and 10pm at Oakwood Baptist Church, Merrivale, London N14 4TE. We offer a learner strings session preceding our main rehearsal, 7pm to 8pm at the same venue, in which we look in more depth at the orchestral arrangements.

All music is provided and you need bring is yourself, your instrument and a music stand.

Guest players are always welcome to sit in and we are looking for new players of all standards in most of our orchestral sections. Please speak with us to find out more

North London Singers

north london singers

North London Singers - NLS - was founded by Claire and Martyn Stogden in 2011.

The choir has performed a wide variety of music in venues as varied as the Royal Hospital Chelsea, Enfield's Dugdale Theatre and churches and retirement homes throughout North London.

We have performed on our own and have featured in orchestral and brass band concerts arranged by Four Hills Music.;

Currently we number more than forty singers in soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. We have singers who can read music and singers who can't.

We are a very friendly and often excitable bunch, and we try our voices at most styles of music. We sing in 2, 3 or 4 part harmony, although there is no requirement to be able to read music.  The emphasis is on fun and learning and striving to be the best we can be.

We don’t take ourselves too seriously (well, maybe a bit): there are no auditions to join, just an enthusiasm to be part of a happy throng of song

The Big Choir

The Big Choir logo

The Big Choir is a group of enthusiastic singers who fundraise for research into 200 different types of cancer.  We are singers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds and welcome anyone who just loves to sing.  We're not a choir for people who are affected by cancer, but sadly most of our members have been affected either personally or have lost loved ones.  That's why they are so happy to see their monthly subs going to such a worthy cause.  Our donation goes via Cancer Research to the scientists at www.crick.ac.uk, a new biochemical research facility for pioneering research into all cancers.  Apart from the fundraising, we have a very good time together, both during sessions and socially.  We really are one big happy family and we'll make you extremely welcome if you'd like to join us.

All our rehearsals are open to the public and to potential new members, so why not pay us a visit.

Choose between four locations for rehearsals:

  • East Finchley - Monday evenings
  • Enfield - Wednesday mornings
  • Winchmore Hill - Wednesday evenings
  • East Barnet - Thursday evenings

Get in touch if you'd like to come along.

Winchmore String Orchestra

Winchmore String Orchestra

Twenty years ago a new musical venture began in Winchmore Hill – an amateur string orchestra. Called unpretentiously the Winchmore String Orchestra (WSO), or simply the Winchmore Strings, it was the creation of a local professional violinist and teacher, Stanley Lishak, and his wife Bertha, a viola-player.

Today, with a core membership of more than two dozen that is boosted by the addition of guest players at concerts, the orchestra is in fine form. Most of its members live in the boroughs of Enfield and Barnet, though some come from as far afield as Walthamstow, Islington and Hertfordshire. It gives a platform to up-and-coming soloists and a hearing to local composers. And many charities benefit from the funds it raises at its concerts, which are held at Winchmore Hill Methodist Church.
