palmers green station platforms geograph 2776914 by Martin Addison

If you've been impatiently awaiting step-free access to and from these platforms, there's finally some light at the end of the tunnel

Dave Cockle from the Enfield Society has been assiduously attempting to winkle out information from Network Rail about the "Palmers Green Access for All" project to provide lifts at the station. Last week he eventually received some "notes on general progress" with the following information:

  • Network Rail have completed the Outline Design for the project.
  • A contractor has been appointed and the Detailed Design process for the project is underway.
  • We expect to be starting on site by the end of this calendar year, with the lifts entering into service mid-2024.

The email thread which contained this new information goes right back to August 2022 and mainly concerns the project to install lifts to all platforms at Finsbury Park. It includes an email from Network Rail sent in August stating that the Finsbury Park project should be completed by January 2023. In the event, all lifts were in service only on 25th April - so don't be surprised if the scheduled date for PG "slips" a little (probably because of leaves on the line).

Good news none the less!
