routemaster route 29 opposite woolworths palmers green

This rather fine picture of a Routemaster bus on route 29 passing Woolworths in Palmers Green is the cover photo for a new Facebook group called Palmers Green Past, started by Alan Turbero in November last year.

I have created this group to remember the good times and the fun times of Palmers Green growing up in the 70s and the 80s. I look back on for memories of Palmers Green so please feel free to share yours remember keep it fun and keep those memories happy.

The photo must have been taken between 1983 and 1988. Consulting the London bus history bible www.londonbuses.co.uk/_routes/current/029.html, I see that the 29 only started running to Winchmore Hill and Enfield Town, rather than Southgate, in 1983, and in 1988 the Routemasters were replaced by rear-engined buses. There was also an intermission between 1984 and 1987 when there were no Routemasters on the route. But the thing that jumps out of that page for me most, is that the 29 once ran all the way from Victoria to Borehamwood!
