The Mayor of London has issued a message to all Londoners on the first anniversary of the UK's leaving the European Union in which he assures EU citizens living in the city that they are valued, respected and loved and that London will continue to be a beacon for progressive ideas, for decency and diversity, continuing to value everyone, regardless of the colour of their skin, passport or national flag.

The Mayor has set up an online European Londoners Hub with information and advice about Brexit, obtaining settled status, rights and entitlements, UK citizenship and much more.

We are all Londoners

One year after the UK left the European Union, our European values of diversity, friendship and unity feel more important than ever. It’s these values that have helped to keep London going through this difficult period in our history, and that will see us through to the other side.

It is vital on this anniversary to acknowledge the more than one million EU citizens who call London home, and who make our city a better place for us all to live.

We know that European Londoners have suffered hugely due to the impact of both Brexit and the pandemic. They’re a big part of the workforce in our hospitality, tourism and retail industries – some of the hardest-hit across our city. They also make an enormous contribution to our city by working in our public services, including the NHS, and have often been on the frontline during this pandemic in our hospitals and care homes.

Alongside the many ways Londoners have all suffered – losing loved ones, their jobs, and daily routines – many European Londoners face unique barriers to accessing the support services that might lighten these burdens.

If you’re a European Londoner and you’re struggling, please know that help is available.

At City Hall we run an online hub dedicated to supporting EU citizens and their families – please do visit it to get help understanding how to navigate your rights post-Brexit, accessing mental health support and much more.

Support for EU citizens here

Much has changed this year, but one thing hasn’t: Europe will always be a huge part of London’s identity, and hold a special place in our hearts. The common outlook and experiences that bind us together will endure. And the emotional, human and cultural connections forged over many centuries will live on.

My message to every EU citizen in our city is this: You are Londoners.

You are our friends, our colleagues, our neighbours, family members and loved ones. You are valued, respected and loved.

As Mayor, my promise is that London will remain loyal to you and to our shared values. London will continue to be a beacon for progressive ideas, for decency and diversity. And we’ll continue to value everyone, regardless of the colour of their skin, passport or national flag.

This city is your home. You belong here, and always will.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan
