Rebellious sailors keep an eye on organist Adam Dickson
A sure sign of Autumn is the now traditional combination of a classic silent film projected in the atmospheric interior of Christ Church Southgate to the accompaniment of live music improvised on the church's organ.
This year the event takes place on Saturday 21 October, when Talkies will be marking the centenary of the Russian Revolution by showing the ground-breaking Russian film Battleship Potemkin, directed by Sergei Eisenstein. As last year, the organists will be David Hinitt and Adam Dickson.
Talkies founder David Williamson says that the silent screenings at Christ Church are now part of the local calendar:
"As the dark nights draw in, it is a brilliant evening enjoyed by lots of people who love the combination of classic silent films and all-consuming live organ music, which makes the night very special."
The Vicar of Christ Church, Rev Dr Chrichton Limbert, is proud of his church's musical traditions: "Our choir and organists are second to none. Battleship Potemkin is a masterpiece of film-making and Soviet propaganda. Its subject is a mutiny by the Russian Imperial Navy during the first of Russia's 20th century revolutions, which occurred in 1905. Its most famous dramatic sequence is of a pram tumbling down the Odessa steps, but the film is a stunning use of camera and editing which keeps the audience gripped throughout.
Doors open at 7pm and the film will be shown at 7.30.
