From the frivolity of Fragonard to the satire of Hogarth: Baroque and Rococo in Britain and France

A new art course from Enfield & Southgate WEA begins after half-term, when Colin Lomas will be looking at Baroque and Rococo art to show the impact of the political, social and religious changes in art and architecture between 1600 and 1800.

The course, Important French and British Artists 1600-1800, will be presented online using Zoom and Canvas, at 10am on Thursdays, starting on 5th November, and runs for six weeks.

Important French and British Artists 1600-1800

Through the works of important artists, the course will show the impact of political, social and religious changes in art and architecture in Britain and France between 1600 and 1800 and help you develop a critical appreciation of the period. From the frivolity of Fragonard to the satire of Hogarth, from Claude’s sweeping grandeur to Gainsborough’s society portraits, from the baroque glory of St Paul’s to the pastiche of Strawberry Hill, we will examine the brilliance and lasting legacy of art in the French and British Baroque and Rococo periods. The Baroque period in art, music and architecture is approximately 1600 - 1750. The Rococo period stretches from the the death of Louis XIV (1715) to the French revolution (1789).
