Professor Malcolm Earle Smith invites us to a monthly series of Jazz concerts at the Southgate Club.

Back in the day (a hundred years or so) in New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz, a "Professor" was someone who played piano in a brothel. In 2025, the considerably more prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance also has a Jazz Professor - and he's heading our way this month to institute a regular series of Jazz concerts at the Southgate Club, located a stone's throw from the tube station, in Crown Lane. And where better to start, on Thursday 11th December, than with a celebration of a hundred years of music from the "Crescent City"?

Below, Professor Malcolm Earle Smith invites us to Jazz at Obies, launching on Thursday 11th December and from January next year taking place on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Jazz at Obie's: Malcolm Earle Smith's New Orleans Jazz Party

Dear Friends,

As party season approaches, I can’t think of better party music than that from the Crescent City. So I’m inviting you to Malcolm Earle Smith's New Orleans Jazz Party @Obie’s Room for a night of New Orleans-inspired sounds.

Playing alongside me will be some of the finest jazz musicians I know: Enrico Tomasso (trumpet), Tony Kofi (saxophone), Liam Noble (piano), Conor Chaplin (bass) and Dave Ingamells (drums). Together we’ll be playing a mix of joyful songs associated with Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Dr John, the Rebirth Brass Band and others. Come and join us.

And from January 2026, I will be promoting gigs at the same club on the last Wednesday of the month - putting bands together specially for each gig.

I’m excited to get more jazz happening in North London, and hope very much to see some of you there. I would recommend purchasing tickets in advance HERE to avoid disappointment (and they are a little cheaper too!). Please spread the word to anyone who you think might like to come and look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes

Malcolm
