On Sunday May 25th there'll be an opportunity to tour some of the borough's special places - both urban and rural - using the healthiest ways of getting around: walking and cycling.
A house in Gentlemen's Row on the route that the Enfield Society walking tour will take on 25th May. At the same time a cycling tour will be exploring the borough's more rural areas
Local groups Better Streets for Enfield and the Enfield Society will be joining forces with Enfield Council to run parallel events: one exploring on foot a fascinating historic part of Enfield Town, the other taking a circular family-friendly tour by bike on quiet streets, along a section of the New River Path, and through some of Enfield's loveliest parks and countryside.
Meanwhile, Better Streets and the council's Journeys & Places team will be running bike-related activities for all the family on the Library Green, including an obstacle course for young riders.
When it comes to exploring the historic heritage of Enfield Town, who better to be your guide than the Enfield Society? After all, it's thanks to their campaigning over many decades that the most historic parts of the town centre haven’t been swept away to make way for road widening schemes.
During the walk the Society will introduce you to a thousand years of history, a conservation area and many buildings of local and national interest.
The walk leaves at 10am and circles around the Enfield Town Conservation Area. It will be suitable for all ages and take into account varying levels of ability. It will finish at about 11.45 in the town centre.
The walk is free of charge, but you need to register in advance by emailing .
The bike ride will also start at 10am, leaving from the Library Green, which is now much more easily and safely accessed thanks to the new pedestrian crossing over Church Street that was installed as part of the first phase of the Enfield Town Liveable Neighbourhood scheme.
Fully trained marshals from Enfield Cycling Campaign will ensure safety throughout the easy paced ride of approximately five and a half miles.
The ride will start by following the southern part of the Enfield Town to Broxbourne cycling and walking route. The route is still under construction, but the sections that the group will take through the Willow Estate and along the New River are already finished. The riders will then cycle through parkland near Forty Hall and through Hilly Fields Park to Gordon Hill Station. From there they will follow quiet back streets to return to Enfield Town.

Better Streets for Enfield is an alliance of two groups that campaign to make the borough’s roads safe and pleasant for walking, wheeling and cycling (or just stopping for a chat). The first group, Enfield Living Streets, is part of the national charity Living Streets, which traces its history back to the 1920s, when it successfully campaigned for the country’s first pedestrian crossings and for speed limits in towns. The other, Enfield Cycling Campaign, is part of a London-wide charity that works to make cycling a safe and pleasant way of getting around the capital. betterstreets.co.uk
