An announcement last week on the Palmers Green Action Team's Facebook page has created great interest among Palmers Green people who like to make their own things - sewing, knitting, stencilling, you name it:

STITCH! Coming soon to 397 Green Lanes, Palmers Green, N13. Exciting, new pop-up social enterprise…selling craft and sewing products, creative classes and events. We are currently looking for crafting professionals and teachers who might like to run courses here and also anyone who is looking for part-time hours working in the shop. Please email .

The new pop-up - which hopefully, if successful, will become permanent - will not just plug a gap in PG's "retail offer", but it will provide a chance for people to share their skills and make new friends.  But another great thing about it is that the choice of location couldn't be more appropriate.  For 397 Green Lanes, on the corner of Devonshire Road and until last year the home of Skate Attack, was for many decades the fondly remembered drapers and haberdashers Grouts - a shop that somehow managed to retain the look and feel of a 1940s business but survive into the early 21st century.  To get a flavour of what it was like, watch this short film.

So Stitch! should be a fitting heir to Grouts, though no doubt with a much more modern style, and it's unlikely to be selling quite the same range of underwear as used to be displayed in the windows along Devonshire Road!
