Palmers Green's newest public space, Devonshire Square, is to be officially opened at 1pm on Saturday 24th May.

Visualisation of the definitive design for Devonshire Square

Work to create the permanent configuration of Devonshire Square, at the junction of Devonshire Road and Green Lanes, is nearly complete. The new-look public space features a specially designed surface incorporating mosaics designed in conjunction with pupils from Laurel Park School illustrating local landmarks and historic happenings.

Announcing the opening date, Enfield Council's Journey's & Places team say that Devonshire Square will be "a place to meet, create and celebrate in the heart of Palmers Green". The opening event will mark the start of a cultural programme running through June and July - markets, community gatherings and more.

The news has been greeted with enthusiasm by Palmers Green Action Team, a group of people who have done much to entice new businesses to move to PG and to improve the appearance of the urban realm. They have hailed it as "a clear example of what’s possible when local vision, investment, and collaboration come together".

The idea of creating a public square was first suggested by campaigners from Better Streets for Enfield, who pioneered the idea in 2019 when they took over the junction to make room for a "pop-up parklet". The parklet was only there for a few hours, but no doubt played a part in prompting Enfield Council to create Devonshire Square in its interim form in 2022, since when it has played host to regular markets and to a rather extraordinary fashion show.
