School street St Pauls Primary Improving EnfieldA school street scheme comes into force on Monday 7th September outside St Paul's primary school in Ringwood Way, Winchmore Hill.

Between 8.15 and 9.15 in the morning and 2.45 and 3.45 in the afternoon Ringwood Way will be a pedestrian and cycle zone between its junctions with Station Road and Shrubbery Gardens. The only vehicles allowed to enter this normally busy cut-through will be emergency service vehicles, council vehicles, disabled blue badge holders, dial-a-ride buses, refuse collection vehicles, street cleaning vehicles, Royal Mail postal deliveries, transport for children with special educational needs and residents of the stretch of road that will be closed - they will need to apply for permits.

This is one of twelve "school street lite" schemes being introduced this month outside primary schools throughout the borough, funded by the Department for Transport’s Emergency Active Travel Fund - a fund that responds to the challenges posed by COVID-19. It is intended to enable social distancing, improve air quality when children are arriving at and leaving school, and encourage travel to school by walking and cycling.

Unlike the existing school streets (St Monica's in Cannon Road and Oakthorpe School in Tile Kiln Lane), it will not use automatic number plate recognition and access to the street will be controlled by school staff, who will have received training provided by the council

Like other Covid Streetspace schemes, this will be run on a trial basis and in due course the council will set up an online consultation with a view to deciding whether or not to make it permanent.
