school street noticeThe "school street" in the vicinity of Hazelwood Schools comes into effect on Monday morning. The scheme, which will ban most drivers from the area close to the school during pupils' arrival and departure times, was originally scheduled for the start of the Autumn 2022 term, but was delayed because of problems obtaining the automatic number plate recognitions (ANPR) cameras needed to enforce compliance.

School streets have proven benefits. As well as reducing the danger of drivers running over children and their carers, a Transport for London study carried out in 2021 found that school streets reduced nitrogen dioxide at drop-off time by up to 23%, and 18% of parents reported driving to school less when their child attended a school where there was a school street.

Hazelwood School Street: Text of letter sent to residents, parents and business owners dated 8th March 2023

Dear resident, parent or business owner,

We are delighted to announce that the School Street for Hazelwood Primary will be launching on Monday 27 March 2023. School Streets create safer spaces around schools by reducing vehicle movements near to the school gates. The School Street zone includes Hazelwood Lane between Lightcliffe Road and New River Crescent, Riverway between The Crest and Hazelwood Lane, and Kingsley Road. The School Street will be closed between 8.15am to 9.15am and 2.45pm to 3.45pm from Monday to Friday during term time. The zone is shown on the map.

The decision to introduce this School Street was made following a period of statutory consultation held in May 2022. The School Street has now been constructed, and we have been working on the systems to support the project.

The School Street will be enforced using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. If you drive into the zone during the hours of operation without an exemption you will be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

Some exemptions are available. Exempted vehicles are able to pass through the School Street zone at all times, including during the hours of operation. Exemptions are free and can now be applied for. The table below includes information on who is eligible for an exemption and how to apply. Please note that exemptions are not automatically applied, and eligible residents and businesses should follow the process outlined in order to receive their exemption.

People eligible for an exemption to the School Street Apply via
