Nesil Caliskan remains leader of the Labour group and of Enfield Council
Both Labour and Conservative groups on Enfield Council have chosen their new leadership teams following the elections on 5th May and ahead of the council's annual general meeting next week.
Ergin Erbil will be the new deputy council leader
At its annual general meeting on 16th May Enfield Council's Labour group re-elected Cllr Nesil Caliskan as its leader and elected Cllr Ergin Erbil as its deputy leader - previous deputy leader Ian Barnes did not stand for re-election to the council on 5th May.
Alessandro Georgiou takes over from Joanne Laban as leader of the Conservative group
The Conservative group have announced that Alessandro Georgiou, a councillor in Cockfosters ward, is the new leader, replacing Joanne Laban, and Mike Rye deputy leader.
Cllr Georgiou has promised to "stand firm on the commitments we put forward at the election to protect our Green Belt, stop overdevelopment within our communities, remove the LTNs and bring back weekly bin collections."
As well as leaders, the Labour AGM also selected councillors to be members of Enfield's next cabinet: Abdul Abdullahi, Chinelo Anyanwu, Alev Cazimoglu, Susan Erbil, Tim Leaver, Rick Jewell, Gina Needs and George Savva. A press release described the new team as "an exciting mixture of experience and new talent". The portfolios for each cabinet member will be revealed at the annual general meeting of Enfield Council next week.
Labour's press release included an outline of the group's plans for the borough, which Cllr Caliskan described as "an exciting programme of initiatives":
- a new waste and recycling centre
- an option for households to have a bigger recycling bin
- a million more trees
- 50 new school streets
- 1000 more electric vehicle charging points
- continuation of funding of additional police officers "because the Conservative government's police cuts have put everyone's safety at risk"
- a new council law enforcement team with fifty extra officers
- 200 new mobile CCTV cameras across the borough
- a new construction academy and film academy training 1000 people a year
- continuation of the programme to provide 3,500 affordable homes, including homes for key workers.
Calling this an "incredibly ambitious agenda", Nesil Caliskan said that Labour "make no apologies for demanding the very best for the residents in our borough".
