Positive people from the local community needed - could you spare two to four hours a week for a year to help turn a child's life round? This is the question that Chance UK is posing.  By becoming a Chance UK mentor you would be helping inspire a primary school child with behavioural difficulties, who otherwise when a little older might find themself drawn into anti-social or criminal activity. And the benefits are not all one-way.  The work can be tremendously personally rewarding.......

North London Samaritans have got through the first stage of a submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore the "Tin Tabernacle" in Bowes Park for use as a call centre and community centre.  To succeed in Stage 2 they need to prove that there is sufficient demand from community groups and other organisations who would wish to hire such a hall. Winter night shelter volunteers required

St Andrew's Church in Southgate has issued an appeal for people to volunteer to help run a winter night shelter. St Andrew's is one of several churches in the borough involved in the Enfield Churches Winter Night Shelter scheme, being run in association with All People All Places.  The scheme started operation earlier this week and St Andrews is providing overnight shelter on Wednesday nights for six weeks starting on 6th January, offering meals and a warm place to sleep to homeless.......

Further appeal for winter shelter volunteers

A new request has been made for volunteers to help run a church-based winter shelter and a second training event for volunteers has been arranged. The new request comes from the Vicar of All Saints Edmonton, where the shelter would operate on Sunday nights between 2nd January and 13th March 2016. Children's hospice announces ambitious expansion plan

A children's hospice which cares for children in Enfield is planning to expand the number of children it can support at one time. Haven House Children's Hospice, based in Woodford, East London, was set up in 2003, since when it has provided care and support for more than 600 families in North and North East London, West Essex and East Hertfordshire. North London Hospice organising a spectacular talent show to raise money to help fund its work. North London's Got Talent will be held at the Arts Depot in North Finchley on 6th February 2016. We've written before about how North London Samaritans would like to restore the "Tin Tabernacle" at Bowes Park and use it to run their live-saving services.  Now the insurance company Aviva has included it in the Aviva Community Fund.  You can register with the Community Fund and will be given ten votes to distribute as you choose between the 3000+ projects. Depending on how many votes it collects, the Shaftesbury Hall Refurbishment Project (to use its official title) could receive.......
