Council proposing to reduce number of childrens' centres

Enfield Council is consulting residents about its proposals to reduce the number of children's centres. Like other council services, spending reductions are required because of severe reductions in central government funding.  The council's budget for children's centres is reducing from £1.6m to £1.03m per year. Fortnightly green bin collections to start in March

The change from weekly to fortnightly collection of "green" (food and garden waste) recycling will occur in March.  Ahead of the change households will be sent a calendar showing which weeks the green bins will be collected. The blue wheelie bin - no more plastic bags

Enfield Council have recently clarified what exactly is allowed in the blue recycling wheelie bins.  The main change is that plastic bags (including carrier bags) and plastic wrapping are no longer allowed, because other materials were being caught up in them. For obvious reasons, the Council are adamant that nappies, even if unused, must not go in the blue bins, and the same is true of sanitary products.  The Council is taking a "Zero Tolerance" approach because of the problems such.......

Green bin collections likely to go fortnightly

Following the public consultation on the future of "green bin" collections, Enfield Council's Cabinet will be presented with a paper recommending that collection of food and garden waste be reduced from once a week to once a fortnight. Two more community libraries find partners

Enfield Council has found partners for two "community libraries" in the east of the borough.  The builders are currently in at Ponders End Library, making room for the charity Age UK Enfield, which will be moving its headquarters to the library.  Work is also under way at Enfield Highway Library, which will be sharing with a "public health services department". Park Friends unhappy about cutbacks in Council support

The Friends of Broomfield Park have written to Enfield councillors to express serious concerns about the impact of budget cuts on the management and upkeep of parks in the borough and on Broomfield Park in particular - "one of the jewels in the borough's crown". Council approves cuts to services and Council Tax increase

The budget approved by the full meeting of Enfield Council on 24th February includes an increase in Council Tax of 1.99 per cent.  However, because of a reduction in the contribution to the Greater London Authority the effective increase will be smaller - 1.78 per cent. Confusion about plans for museums and archives service

"Enfield 229" has issued a second bulletin with information about its campaign against drastic reductions in Enfield Council's Museums and Archives Service (see this earlier article).  The campaigners are now expecting a decision by the end of November, but say that there have been contradictory indications about the proposed scale of cuts to the service.
