Spitting ban comes into effect

A ban on spitting in the street throughout the London Borough of Enfield came into effect this week, following more than two years of campaigning, a petition and a public consultation exercise. The by-law was approved by central government earlier this year and came into effect on Sunday. Offenders can be fined up to £500. Until 1990 spitting in the street was an offence throughout the UK, punishable by a fine a £5 - a figure which these days appears ridiculously low, but as late as the 1960s.......

Council consulting on important planning policy document

Enfield Council is currently inviting comments from the public on a document that will play an important role in future decisions on planning applications. Council launches Cleaner Streets campaign

On 11 April Enfield Council announced that it was launching the Cleaner Streets Campaign, aimed at reducing littering, dog fouling, fly tipping and untidy front gardens. At present details are sketchy, but it would appear from the announcement on the Council's website and from an earlier message from the Council Leader that the campaign involves: cutting the cost of street cleaning by encouraging residents to "clean up after themselves" - to be achieved both by encouraging people to join.......

Pollution campaigners share ideas for improving borough's air quality

Ahead of a meeting of Enfield Council's Environment and Climate Change Scrutiny Panel, members of Enfield Climate Action Forum's air pollution working group have written to all councillors who are members of the Forum to draw attention to a document which the working group submitted during a consultation last year, setting out actions that they consider important for incorporation in the borough's next Air Quality Action Plan.
