Council planning changes to local study/local history facilities

Enfield residents are being invited to comment on proposed changes to the Council's "heritage resources" which are intended primarily as a cost-cutting measure, but at the same time would provide increased online access to these resources. The Council is proposing to digitise the materials stored at the Local Studies Centre in Thomas Hardy House and make them available online.  The current Monday to Friday drop-in access to the Local Studies Centre would cease and visitors wishing to see.......

Middlesex/Hertfordshire boundary marker restored

An 18th century stone boundary marker destroyed by council workmen years ago and left in ruins has been rebuilt by local conservation group Southgate Green Association. Local stonemasons Abacus Stone were awarded the task of piecing together the obelisk using methods adopted to restore the temple ruins at Karnak, Egypt. The obelisk is one of two remaining in Enfield. The obelisk is located on Waterfall Road down the road from The Green, set back from the kerb on the bend and hidden from view.......

An astonishing tour of architectural and artistic delights

The video below, released in connection with an exhibition at Bruce Castle Museum, is a beautifully filmed and soberly narrated tour of the architectural and artistic delights to be found within churches in Tottenham, Hornsey, Stamford Hill, Noel Park and Harringay.  The buildings date from the middle ages right through to the 1990s - but the modern buildings contain some astounding items salvaged from demolished buildings. "Walk through History": Exploring the borough 50 years on

Found in the Town Hall: the "Palmers Scream"

We have obtained photographic evidence that the "old document" discovered by workmen in the former Southgate Town Hall does exist and its content is, to say the least, extraordinary. The photographs, supplied by an anonymous source, show an old scroll that appears to have been found in a small wooden case.  There are also photographs of the writing.......

The KinoVan visits Enfield Town

On Thursday 12th March, from 1pm to 4pm, Enfield Town Market will play host to an unusual visitor - a KinoVan (or should that be "the KinoVan"?) The Enfield Society has just published the fourth volume in its series A History of Enfield.  "A Time of Change", covers the period 1939 -1969. Truro House - Introductory Article

Truro House is a Grade ll listed building on the corner of Green Lanes and Oakthorpe Road which is on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk register. The entry reads, “Early to mid C19 detached villa with C19 stable block. Enfield have written to owners with a suggested schedule for repair works, awaiting timetable. Civic Trust to unveil plaque to pioneering wildlife photographer

Southgate District Civic Trust and Enfield Grammar School are combining to place a local blue plaque on the house where pioneer wildlife photographer Oliver Pike (1877-1963) lived with his family from 1882 to 1914, 96 Green Dragon Lane in Winchmore Hill, which was the location for his early natural history photographs and books.
