02 June 2015

All effort should be taken to bring joy and merriment to its grasses throughout the year, for each smile reduces the power of the witches as they sleep."  One group of people who are rising to the challenge of "bringing joy and merriment to its grasses" are the Friends of Broomfield Park, who this year are extending the season of summer free musical events to take in.......

Zoot suits and hot jazz - what would Gilbert and Sullivan make of it?

03 March 2015

This year's spring production by FFBOS is a radical retelling of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, The Mikado.  Retitled Hot Mikado, this musical story brings a modern twist to the popular tale about the wandering minstrel Nanki-Poo and his love for the fair maid Yum-Yum. Expect hot jazz solos, big swing numbers and sharp zoot suits, as FFBOS brings this fantastic show to life. This toe-tappingly fun show will be coming to the Intimate Theatre in Palmers Green, for one week only, so.......

03 January 2015

An urgent call to Enfield Gentlemen from Simon Gilbert! The Northern Lights - in Winchmore Hill!

12 November 2014

Ask your average music-lover to name half-a-dozen Germanic or Italian or Russian composers and he or she will rattle off a list with ease. But Scandinavian composers? Hmm. Well, Sibelius, of course, and Grieg, then, let's see, Nielsen, er ...... On the cold northern fringe of Europe, Scandinavia tends not to be thought of as a fully paid-up part of the continent's culture, at least as far as classical music is concerned. Except for the justly well-known Sibelius and Grieg, concert planners.......

Boogie-ing to transform the "Tin Tabernacle"

11 October 2014

If you travel to Bowes Park station, walk up the stairs from the platform and turn right (towards Bounds Green), the first building you encounter when leaving the station is Shaftesbury Hall, a former chapel now known locally as the "Tin Tabernacle".  It's a rare survivor of a type of metal self-assembly church that sprang up the Victorian era, but is now in a state of disrepair.  Shaftesbury Hall aka the Tin TabernacleSince 1974 the Tin Tabernacle has belonged to North London.......

Singing the "Greek Blues" to help leukaemia sufferers

The haunting Greek musical style Rembetika (the "Greek Blues") will be the theme of a trilogy of events - two concerts and a film - which will be raising money for the Leukaemia Cancer Society, starting this month.  And appropriately enough, given the large Greek-speaking presence in our area, the first two events in the Trilogy of the Greek Blues will be taking place locally. The Trilogy begins with Rembetika and Beyond - A Journey into the Greek Blues, a concert at the Millfield Theatre.......
