As previously reported, in the run-up to Christmas the Cards For Good Causes card and gift shop is again open at Palmers Green United Reformed Church in Fox Lane. And this year the shop is selling a card featuring one of the highlights of Broomfield Park - the beautiful Conservatory that is maintained by the Friends of Broomfield Park.

If you think a local park, sports field or other green space is "the UK's Best", you have until 4th November to submit a nomination to the organisation Fields in Trust.
Fields in Trust is dedicated to protecting "vital open spaces all across the UK" and many parks, sports fields, playgrounds and other open spaces are members.
For the first time this year members of the public will be able to nominate open spaces (not necessarily Fields in Trust members) for a new award UK's Best Park - As.......

Friends of Hazelwood Rec have applied to the OneFamily Foundation for a grant of £25,000 to pay for improvements to the children's playground.
Hazelwood Rec is a small park situated between Hedge Lane and Hazelwood Lane, with football pitches, a cricket field and tennis courts. One side of the park is bounded by the New River and lined with willow trees.

Starting this week, local people will be asked by Enfield Council to give their views about what should be done with the fire-damaged remains of Broomfield House. The consultation - oneline and by post - will also ask about options for the future of the historic Stableyard and of Broomfield Park as a whole.
This Sunday's Palmers Green Festival will provide an opportunity to find out more about the house and future options. Enfield Council will have a stall where you'll be able to.......

This was the scene in Arnos Park on Wednesday when the Pymmes Brook burst its banks and inundated part of the park, as captured by "Bob" and uploaded to his Vimeo channel.

Reducing or preventing this sort of flash flooding is what Thames 21/Love the Lea are working so hard on. They are deliberately slowing down streams by planting vegetation and creating soakaways. Among the problems that they face, however, are misplumbed houses where waste that should go.......

As we confidently forecast in the weekly newsletter, last Sunday was hot and sunny and people turned out in droves to listen to the Broomfield Blues in Broomfield Park. They also stopped by at the Community Orchard to admire the wildflowers, see how the apples were coming on, drink home-made apple wine and observe the insects in their bug hotel, the Bugsingham Palace. A few visitors even tried their hand at croquet on the former bowling green. And there were chilli plants on.......

The Friends of Firs Farm have provided a copy of a document setting out the proposals for the creation of a wetlands area in the park. The detailed information in the document is the subject of a consultation exercise in which Enfield Council are seeking the views of people living near the playing fields and park.

The first of this year's Proms in the Park was hot and sunny, the second - held last Sunday - was overcast with occasional drizzle. But the weather didn't deter over a hundred people gathering to listen and dance to musicians from Bowes Park Folk Club and local singer/songwriter Luke Carey - as you can see from the cutting below, taken from the Enfield Gazette.

It's just after a year since the Palmers Greenery Community Cafe opened in Broomfield Park - but work on this imaginative project goes back much longer. It has transformed an abandoned toilet building into a top destination for visitors to the park.

A brand new reed bed is being constructed in Grovelands Park lake to help improve water quality.
The reed bed is being created as part of Thames21’s Salmons Brook Healthy River Challenge together with Enfield Council. The aim of the project is to improve water quality across the area through the delivery of practical environmental schemes. Currently Salmons Brook and the waterways which feed it suffer from pollution due to plumbing misconnections and run-off from roads which contain heavy.......

Despite rain earlier in the day, the Proms in the Park season got off to a hot and sunny start on Sunday afternoon. A pleasant atmosphere prevailed as music lovers sat on the grass near the Broomfield Park bandstand to listen to music by North London Brass, with an intermission provided by young drummers from BishBashBosh and BoxBeaters.

Breaking with their tradition of running photographic competitions over the winter, the Friends of Broomfield Park have announced that this year the competition will take place during the summer.
Prizes will be awarded in two categories: Adults and Under 16s. You can enter up to three pictures, which must be taken "of the Park or in the Park" between 1st June and the closing date for entries, which is 22nd August.
All entries will be displayed on the Friends of Broomfield Park.......

Many people run, swim or cycle to raise money for charity, a few people do two out of three of these things and even fewer combine all three, but one grandmother who does is 72-year-old Eddie Brocklesby, Britain's oldest competing "Ironman" triathlete. Following lobbying by friends of parks groups and submission of public petitions, Enfield Council has modified the decision it took in 2014 to cease locking all parks overnight. The new policy is to completely cease locking those parks where only some entrances have been locked, but to continue to completely lock parks where the practice has been to lock all entrances overnight.

The mysterious "Palmers Scream" scroll, discovered in Southgate Town Hall, says that "Broomfield should be a happy place. All effort should be taken to bring joy and merriment to its grasses throughout the year, for each smile reduces the power of the witches as they sleep." One group of people who are rising to the challenge of "bringing joy and merriment to its grasses" are the Friends of Broomfield Park, who this year are extending the season of summer free musical events to take in.......

Efforts are continuing to obtain the funds needed to restore Broomfield House. In preparation for a probable public consultation exercise later in the year, a model of the house dating from 1951 (the model, that is - the house is rather older!) is to go on show. It is hoped that a Conservation Management Plan for the whole of Broomfield Park, currently in development, will enable the Broomfield House Trust and Enfield Council to make a second, successful, bid for Heritage Lottery.......
