Waltham Forest's "village" traffic management schemes have been highly successful. Hopefully, Enfield's road planners will be equally ambitious when they restart work on Quieter Neighbourhoods. As 2016 draws to a close it's good to see work finally under way to restore to people the freedom to travel along Green Lanes by bicycle safely and securely - a freedom that has been increasingly denied for the past fifty or sixty years. The debate about Enfield’s Mini Holland rages on via social media and the local press – will there be gridlocked roads? Vacant businesses? Cyclists mowing down the elderly at bus stops? Meanwhile, some of us from Better Streets for Enfield and Enfield Cycling Campaign decided it would be easiest just to go and look at a Mini Holland that’s already in progress. Waltham Forest is, after all, next door to us, and ahead of Enfield in completing the work.

Green Lanes cycle lanes proposals have public backing

According to a press release issued by Enfield Council today, a majority of people who responded to the public consultation about the A105 Cycle Enfield proposals indicated that they were in favour of the scheme going ahead. The press release states that "60 per cent of the 1,646 people consulted said they supported the plans, while just 40 percent were opposed to them". More Quieter Neighbourhood consultations launched

Enfield Council has begun the first phase of consultation for a further Quieter Neighbourhood in the vicinity of Palmers Green: Fernleigh Road QN will comprise Hoppers Road and all roads to the east as far as, but not including, Green Lanes, plus Winchmore Hill Green and the area to its east as far as Green Lanes, including Compton Road and Station Road. Fox Lane Quieter Neighbourhood Design Workshop

Work on the Fox Lane Quieter Neighbourhood has now moved on to the stage where selected residents are invited to participate in design workshops. Colin Younger attended a workshop on 10th February. Following the presentation hosted by the Fox Lane and District Residents' Association, Enfield Traffic and Transport officers held a design workshop on 10th February at St Johns Church Hall. Traffic calming: Is it needed and what are the best methods?

The Quieter Neighbourhoods schemes which Enfield Council are planning will use various "traffic calming" measures, the aim of which is to reduce traffic accidents, encourage walking and cycling by reducing the stress associated with heavy or fast traffic, and generally make life pleasanter for people living, walking or cycling along residential streets away from main roads. The initial consultation stage has now begun for two "Quieter Neighbourhood" schemes covering a large swathe of residential streets extending from the Cambridge Roundabout in the south east almost as far as Southgate Circus in the north west (though excluding Green Lanes, which runs between the two areas). What can we learn from Turnpike Lane DIY Streets?

Having posted some notes on the street redesign in the Turnpike Lane/West Green area. I went down this morning to take a look at the work. I still not sure how relevant this is to the Fox Lane area Quiet Neighbourhood sscheme, basically because the street plan is so different. However the individual elements may be of some interest. There's a lot more going on about traffic management/traffic calming locally than I had realised - in addition to Mini-Holland (rebranded as Cycle Enfield) and the Quieter Neighbourhoods schemes (see this article) In particular two schemes, one in Enfield and one in Haringey, seem relevant. DIY Streets Edmonton Enfield are engaged with Sustrans on a "DIY" street scheme which involves Church Street Edmonton between the A10 and Hertford Road. Palmers Green Community has obtained information about the extent of the "Quieter Neighbourhoods" that Enfield Council is planning to create in and around Palmers Green. Council consults on options to reduce rat running south of the North Circ

Enfield Council is consulting residents about options for changing traffic behaviour in the area to the south of the North Circular Road and east of Green Lanes. This has been prompted by complaints from residents of Grenoble Gardens about the volume of traffic using their road and the queues that build up at the junction with Green Lanes.
