Among the events being organised by Enfield Council to mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of the present-day London boroughs is a series of free local history walks led by Joe Studman. They start on 16th June and run through to March 2016, criss-crossing the borough and taking in every part of Enfield, examining its rich, varied and fascinating history and characters..

Joe Studman is a born and bred Londoner. Born within the sound of Bow Bells he feels lost and abandoned when outside the capital. His passion and enthusiasm for The City and its suburbs manifests itself on his walks.
He is a qualified City of London Guide and also guides for the National Trust and English Heritage.
Details of the first three walks
Tuesday 16 June: Chase Side & Gentleman's Row
- Meet at Enfield Chase Station at 7pm
- Discover Enfield's Plague Pit, Workhouse and first Hospital. Also hear about Enfield's early education buildings. Throw in the odd ghost and murder before we even reach Gentleman's Row.
Thursday 9 July: Winchmore Hill
- Meet at Winchmore Hill Station at 7pm
- From a sleepy hamlet that was a refuge to Quakers and smugglers the village became home to wealthy brewers and business men. This walk reveals their stories and throws in a few surprises.
Sunday 26 July: Edmonton Conservation Area
- Meet at Edmonton Green Station at 2pm
- Edmonton has such rich history and associations. We meet Charles Lamb, John Keats and John Gilpin. We uncover a garden city and a tragic air crash. We also find out how the district council provided progressive services for its residents.
