Set in Korea, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s heart-warming, funny and moving social drama takes its theme from the “baby boxes” set up in Korean churches for new mothers to leave unwanted infants.
Once again, Kore-eda explores the meaning of family, however makeshift it may be, and finds warmth and empathy in the most unlikely places. The backstories are rich, the motivations finely drawn and the film’s success is in no small way due to the cast’s uniformly fine performances.
