Celebrating Firs Farm Community Hub!

On Friday the Friends of Firs Farm invite everyone to the grand opening of their Community Hub, just off Firs Lane. The event starts at 2pm, with the opening ceremony being performed by radio and TV host Melvin Odoom at 2.30pm. Then there will be music from local musicians until 8pm.

The Hub is a splendid new facility providing food and drink between 9am and 4pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm at weekends, a sensory room, a changing places toilet and several rooms that groups can hire for the evening. It's already hosted a wide range of events. Pop in next time you're visiting the wonderful Firs Farm Wetlands.

Council recruiting community engagement officer to help 'unlock Broomfield Park for the community'

Enfield Council is recruiting an officer whose role will be to engage with the public during the development phase of a project to 'memorialise' Broomfield House and 'conserve and enhance' Broomfield Park.

Arnos Park river restoration project

Officers from the Environment Agency and Enfield Council held an information and engagement session in Arnos Park last Saturday to brief residents about ideas for a river restoration project in the park designed to enhance wildlife, reduce the risk of properties being flooded and help filter out impurities from the Pymmes Brook, which is badly affected by foul water entering the river from misconnected bathrooms..

Simultaneously, an opposition group were collecting signatures for a petition opposing the proposals.

On Facebook, Alison Archer from the Pymmes BrookERS, a group of volunteers who work to improve the condition of our local river, has written about the " level of misinformation, negativity + hostility directed at the proposal and sometimes, at us", commenting that it's often the negative voices that are loudest, but they don't always reflect the views of the community.

In 2021 a campaign to prevent a 24-hour slot arcade opening in Palmers Green was unsuccessful. Since then we've heard no complaints about the branch of Merkur Slots. So did the protests exaggerate the threat that a few "bingo" machines posed?

Well, recent reports in the Observer newspaper uncover the severe social and personal problems that can be caused by seemingly harmless slot machines hidden behind the opaque windows of branches of Merkur Slots and other arcade operators. They also reveal that the previous government was preparing to ease already lax restrictions on such establishments. Will the new government take a different approach?
