Enfield Society backs measures to reduce driving and encourage walking and cycling

A recently published Environmental Statement by the Enfield Society indicates support for measures to reduce car use and encourage walking and cycling, while stressing that the Society 'is careful not to become involved in political debate' and 'will only support schemes where it can be clearly demonstrated that reduced traffic flows in some areas do not significantly increase them elsewhere'. Cycling 'is not just the preserve of young people, it should be viewed as an important mode of transport'. By discouraging car use 'our air will be cleaner, our health better, the burden on the NHS reduced and deaths/serious injuries on the roads reduced'.

Year-on-year increase in cycle lanes usage

Enfield Council has released the latest figures for the number of bikes passing Palmers Green Triangle in either direction. Compared with December 2019 usage average weekday usage was up by a half and average weekend usage doubled.

Healthier journeys to St Monica's, thanks to the low-traffic neighbourhood

A year ago more than half the children attending St Monica's school arrived by car and only just over a quarter by 'active travel' - walking, cycling, scooting or skating. Now, after the introduction of a school street and the Fox Lane low-traffic neighbourhood, the proportions are almost exactly reversed. The headteacher has now begun cycling to school and is suggesting that those parents who still drive all the way to school should think about other ways of getting there.

100,000 new trees and a new walking and cycling route

11 August 2020

An award of £748,000 from the Mayor of London plus £425,000 from the Forestry Commission will enable Enfield Council and Thames21 to start work this autumn on creating a large new woodland area in the north west of the borough. The new trees - up to 100,000 in total over a three-year period - will play an important part in Enfield's plans to achieve 'net zero carbon' by 2040 while providing a major new public utility. The project will also allow the council to progress its long-term scheme for a walking and cycling route across the entire width of the borough.

Council consulting on modifications to parking and loading arrangements along the A105

27 November 2019

After assessing feedback received during the six month-long consultation period, Enfield Council is consulting on some minor modifications to the experimental traffic orders relating to parking and loading restrictions along the A105 adjacent to the cycle lanes. The modifications would provide additional parking and loading points in Green Lanes, Winchmore Hill, and in Village Road, Enfield.

Volunteers required for research into effect of cycling infrastructure on older and disabled people

Transport for London (TFL) are carrying out research into new cycling infrastructure in LB Camden, LB Enfield, and LB Waltham Forest and are seeking volunteers. They would like to understand the experiences of older and disabled people, particularly when getting on and off the buses where pedestrians and cyclists are having to share the same space.

Steady growth in use of bike lanes

Statistics provided by Cycle Enfield show that the number of people riding bikes past an automatic count point at Palmers Green Triangle has been steadily rising over the last four months. In February trips past the counter in either direction totalled 7,343. By May this measure had risen to 11,166. Average weekday trips rose from 304 a day in February to 396 a day in May

Researchers discover that cycle lanes reduce fatalities among all road users

The most comprehensive study of bicycle and road safety to date finds that building safe facilities for cyclists is one of the biggest factors in road safety for everyone. Bicycling infrastructure -- specifically, separated and protected bike lanes -- leads to fewer fatalities and better road-safety outcomes for all road users.

Joining forces to challenge local politicians to create My Liveable London

In the run up to the council elections on 3rd May two organisations that campaign for a fresh approach to London's streets have come together to set out a challenge for party leaders in each of London's 32 boroughs. London Living Streets, who seek better streets for pedestrians, are combining forces with the London Cycle Campaign, who, unsurprisingly, would like pleasanter and safer conditions for people riding bikes in London. They are calling their joint campaign My Liveable London and they want boroughs to create more "low traffic neighbourhoods".
