Forum topic: Last week's council meeting

On the Enfield Voices Facebook group Hannah Dyson has written up her notes taken at the meeting of Enfield Council on 20th September.

The main subjects discussed were the state of the retail sector in Enfield Town, council expenditure cuts and schools funding.

Hannah has provided very detailed notes on these discussions, but wisely has said little about what she calls the "unfortunate indiscretion" - when a councillor launched a rather unpleasant personal attack on another councillor who was proposing the schools motion. The Conservative whip has now been withdrawn from that councillor, who now sits as an Independent, alongside another former Conservative councillor who was recently suspended from the group for a similar "unfortunate indiscretion". Both of these people are still councillors, still able to vote and still being paid, though I think we might well have some doubts about their suitability. By contrast, a third Conservative councillor, Jon Daniels, has taken the honorable decision to resign because he feels he can't do the job properly - he can't devote sufficient time to the council without neglecting his family and job. An attitude which I think gives the lie to accusations from some people that councillors are a bunch of freeloaders.
