amy small versionFor the fourth event in this year's Here Suburban Film Festival Talkies Community Cinema is setting up its screen at Chickenshed.  If the first Here night celebrated a "boy from suburbia" (David Bowie), on Saturday 16th April it will be the turn of a famous girl from a bit of suburbia that's even closer to home.

Amy is an Oscar-winning documentary about Southgate girl Amy Winehouse made by another north Londoner, Asif Kapadia.  It's an insightful and moving portrait of a pop star with soul.  Amy’s rare musical ability made her a star, while her chaotic personal life stole headlines. With rare interviews and never-before-seen archival footage, the film takes us behind the headlines to reveal a prodigiously talented young woman whose life ended far too soon. With this film, the world will fall in love with the real Amy Winehouse and her music all over again.

The director

asif kapadiaAsif Kapadia grew up in our part of London and has become an international force in documentary making, winning the Oscar for best documentary in 2016. He says:  “This is a film about Amy and her writing.  People didn’t realise how important her lyrics were and how personal they were.

“Just putting her lyrics on the screen lets people know that they might have danced to that song and maybe didn’t realise how personal the content really was.”

With a bit of luck, Asif himself will be making an appearance on the night!

The live music

The evening will include live music performed by the Chickenshed Youth Band, using the film as their inspiration.

The venue

Talkies is pleased to hold this event in partnership with Chickenshed, at their main centre in Southgate.

Chickenshed is an inclusive theatre company and registered charity which creates theatre for all ages and runs outreach projects, education courses and membership programmes throughout the year.  A worthy recipient of money raised at the event, which is why Talkies will be charging a bit more than usual and donating its takings to Chickenshed.
