friends of talkiesIf you haven't made a New Year's Resolution or you've already given up on the one you did make, why not decide to become a Friend of Talkies Community Cinema and help our greatest local success story become even more ambitious in its scope and popularity?  Joining now will mean you have a whole year's worth of Friends' benefits to look forward to (and opportunities to make some new flesh-and-blood friends too).

Talkies has now been up and running for just over four years and its screens now pop up not just in Palmers Green, but also in Southgate, Enfield Town, Bounds Green/Bowes Park and Bush Hill Park.  And it uses an extraordinary range of venues - tea shops, sports and social clubs, an abandoned bowling green and two Edwardian churches, whose dark and spacious interiors and live organ accompaniment add an extra touch of atmosphere to silent masterpieces.

Films are central to Talkies, of course, but at its heart is the idea of Community.

Venues usually open half an hour before the film, giving you a chance to have a drink and chat to other audience members, and they often stay open after the screening has finished.

Many events include a short talk by a film expert or by a member of the production team or cast, and when appropriate there are musicians playing live.

Talkies is entirely run by volunteers - and is always on the lookout for new people.

Up to now income from ticket sales has been supplemented by grants and sponsorship for special events, but times are hard - there are no more council grants and local businesses are less willing to help.  Becoming a Friend of Talkies isn't expensive, but provides a little bit of extra money up-front, enabling Talkies to continue to develop innovative ideas and to commission new work by young locally based film makers and run the annual "Here" Suburban Film Festival.

How does the Friends scheme help?

In 2015 we used Friends’ funding to help buy a new sound system. 2016 funding contributed nearly 30% to the £2,700 that went to young filmmakers: to the HERE Festival four short films commissions and to a young local director to help her complete two shorts. In 2017 for Friends of Talkies we aim to:

  • continue advance notice of events
  • run at least three Friends special events
  • use the funding to commission more short films by young filmmakers for the HERE Festival.

What are the benefits?

  • Advance notice of upcoming events, ahead of public sales
  • Invitations to Friends’ events
  • Acknowledgement of your support on our website
  • Invitation to contribute to decisions about Talkies through involvement at the AGM.
