Intimate Theatre wins a stay of execution

Enfield's planning committee yesterday voted to defer approval of the application to demolish the Intimate Theatre to make place for a new parish centre. This represents a change of mind from November 2020, when the same committee approved an almost identical planning application.

A Southgate resident who is unhappy about the appearance of a newly developed part of Southgate Cemetery has started an online petition asking Enfield Council to take steps to preserve the cemetery's green and biodiverse character and to plant greenery in the new part to bring its appearance into line with older sections.

Historic England funding Tottenham heritage restoration project

'Stories of Enfield' - could you be a storyteller?

Enfield Council has received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a series of community heritage activities - the Stories of Enfield. Community organisations and individuals who have ideas for suitable activities are invited to apply for training which will enable them to devise, develop and deliver their projects. The range of possible subject matter is broad, and there are many different ways in which each story could be presented.

Campaign launched to defend the historic heart of Enfield Town

Death warrant for the Intimate

Enfield's planning committee tonight voted to approve the plan to demolish St Monica's Large Hall (aka the Intimate Theatre) to make way for a new parish centre for the adjoining church plus six two-bed flats. There were seven votes for, one against and four absentions.

The London Historic Buildings Trust is seeking ideas from the community about future uses of two important 18th century buildings in Edmonton - the former Girls' Charity School the adjacent cottage, located in Church Street, just to the west of Edmonton Green station. The site includes a school hall with a second classroom, a cottage which was originally for the headmistress, and a large secluded garden to the rear.

What future for Enfield's Museum and Archive Service?

Ever since the news slipped out in March that the museum and local studies service would be losing their current accommodation in the Dugdale Centre, the Enfield Society has been seeking information and reassurances about their future location and accessibility. A letter to the council leader has gone unanswered, and the Society is now asking members and other residents to write to the leader, council officers and local councillors.

In response to a complaint from the Friends of the Lakes Estate Conservation Area about unauthorised tree surgery, an Enfield council officer has written warning against scams operated by rogue tree surgeons - in this case, by a firm called Acacia Tree Surgery.

Conserving the oldest structure on the New River

The Enfield Society has reported some positive news about the oldest structure along the New River - the Clarendon Arch, an aqueduct which carries the 17th century manmade river across the Salmons Brook.

Each edition of the quarterly newsletter published by the Enfield Society has one or more articles about historic buildings in the borough, many of them written by Stephen Gilburt. Over the years these have built up to form a rich resource for anyone interested in finding out about Enfield's history and heritage, but even though the newsletters are available online there has been no way of easily finding articles of interest. That is, until now.
