A group that advocates for pedestrians and cyclists is asking Enfield residents to express their support for changes to a key junction that would significantly improve safety and convenience for people navigating it on foot or by bike.

Better Streets for Enfield, who campaign for a better deal for people walking, wheeling or cycling on the borough's roads, have issued a statement about a consultation currently under way about the redesign of a key junction where a west-east walking and cycling route crosses the Great Cambridge Road. Transport for London's proposals, which would reduce hazard and inconvenience for pedestrians and cyclists, are controversial with some drivers.

Support the proposed changes to the A10/Lincoln Road junction

Transport for London is consulting about changes to the junction where Lincoln Road in Bush Hill Park crosses the A10 Great Cambridge Road. This is a key section of the walking and cycling route between Enfield Town and Ponders End that is being currently being created in stages.

Better Streets for Enfield support the scheme, though we have some questions, including about how long it will take walkers and wheelers to get from corner to corner across the various sets of lights. Details of timings of the lights are not included in the consultation.

In particular we support the reduction in traffic outside Bush Hill primary school and the cycle crossing across the A10. At the moment getting across the A10 is not a pleasant experience for anyone not in a car or other motor vehicle.

As a reminder: approximately a third of Enfield households do not own a car. A majority (just) of journeys made in Enfield are not by car, but Enfield is 28th out of 32 boroughs on this metric. Waltham Forest, Brent, Hilingdon, Bromley etc are ahead of us.

Making journeys easier for walkers, wheelers and cyclists helps to shift that metric and make us a safer, healthier and people-friendly borough.

We are aware of some concerns about the removal of the left turn from Lincoln Road on to the A10. Given that, we have asked if traffic data is available for how often that particular turn is used. We would also like to know what percentage of that is residents or those coming from outside and cutting through. Potentially it may be possible to keep the left turn and have a cycle only phase for the proposed crossing. Let's see.

We think that information will be helpful for some in making up their mind - but we would like you to add your support via the consultation.
