Enfield Council is inviting people to apply to be members of a group being set up to ensure that the views of deaf and disabled people are heard throughout the design phases of projects designed to enable and encourage people to use environmentally sustainable means to make daily journeys, such as school streets, quieter neighbourhoods and walking and cycling routes.

Enfield Council's Journeys & Places team is seeking community input into early work on the design of an active travel (walking and cycling) route between Palmers Green, Arnos Grove and New Southgate stations. Residents are being invited to contribute by adding annotated pins to an interactive online map of a suggested route designed to use mainly quiet streets. The deadline for responding via the map is 7th May.

Enfield Council's recently announced plans for a new cycling and walking route will mean that the important shopping, travel and employment hub at Southgate Circus will for the first time be safely accessible by bike from the Fox Lane LTN and Palmers Green. However, continuing the route east of PG to the Cambridge Roundabout will require bold measures to make Hazelwood Lane safe for cycling.

In the run-up to International Women's Day a chance to get together and have a lot of fun, but also to send a serious message to the Mayor and council leaders throughout the capital about the gender gap in safe cycling provision.

A manifesto sent by Enfield Climate Action Forum to all candidates standing in the council elections asks them to acknowledge the profound risks created by climate change, the need to both mitigate and adapt to its effects and to protect the most vulnerable people and ensure that measures taken do not cause suffering for the most disadvantaged members of the community. It sets out a list of actions needed to cut waste; reduce car use; cut pollution; ensure that the planning system works to reduce rather than exacerbate climate risk; and mitigate flood risk.

Following 'call-ins' by opposition councillors, Enfield Council's scrutiny committee will be discussing the council leader's decisions to make two active travel schemes permanent: the Fox Lane low-traffic neighbourhood and a small scheme in Bull Lane near the North Middlesex Hospital. The meeting on 28th February will also discuss a petition calling on the council to 'take down the flower beds and wooden blocks in the middle of the road for all of the palmers green and Winchmore Hill area'.

Transport for London's parlous financial situation, brought on by a pandemic-induced catastrophic fall off in fares revenue, not only threatens big cuts to tube and bus services . Unless an adequate long-term solution is found, in place of the grudgingly given six-month government gap-plugging deals, the outcome will be even worse congestion on the roads than we are already experiencing, and other impacts affecting not just London. Anyone interested in London's future should read this important article by the chief executive of the Centre for London thinktank.

The First and Last Mile - the Dynamic of Everyday Journeys is based on research into how 850 regular commuters are able to incorporate active travel into their journeys to and from work. It focuses on the benefits that might be secured if people switched from car travel to public transport and used more active travel modes for the journey to and from the railway station or bus stop - making the most of the 'first and last' mile of their daily journey.

In a video made for the RoadPeace Challenge 2023, Professor Scarlett McNally, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, calls on drivers to drive more safely around cyclists and pedestrians in order to encourage active travel, which, she ways is 'so good for people's health'. Where cities reduce their speeds to 20mph, she says, casualty rates reduce by 40 per cent.
